rockstar1624705852 Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 hi guys, newbie here needs help. i've just inherited a home theater system from my dad. he's using a pair of JBL CM52 satellites and i have no idea what the impedence is. on the JBL website they only have the 120v version and it's 6 ohms. is it possible to use 6 ohm satelliteswhen everything else is 8 ohms? how do i test to confirm? ???
SiriuslyCold Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Hello and welcome to XP ! rockstar, huh... ;D its OK to use 6Ohms sats as long as your amp/receiver states it is rated for 6 or 8 Ohms
rockstar1624705852 Posted April 2, 2007 Author Posted April 2, 2007 thanks for the warm welcome :) bro, i'm getting confused here... is it ok to mix 6 ohms speakers and 8 ohms ones? my reciever was a harman kardon and it's surround left channel went kaputz recently and i dun know why. i bought an entry level yahama rx-v459 and i'm paranoid if the impedence of the satellites may have caused a problem. i can set my reciever to either 6 or 8 ohms. it's now at 8 ohms ços my front, center, left and sub are all rated 8 ohms. so i'm just wondering how to check impedence of my satellites. :(
hifiluv Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 normally shd be ok, i hv been mixing different types of speakers for HT, a rojak really, with 6ohms and 8 ohms speakers, and sound is ok, when playing Eagle's Hell Freeze Over DVD, each indv guitars can be heard...ha ha..... no problems todate. :) but with 4 ohms speakers, i m not too sure.....
rockstar1624705852 Posted April 3, 2007 Author Posted April 3, 2007 really? won't that be underpowering the speakers? maybe i've misunderstood something i read in the FAQ thread, hehe... :-\ boy, just when i tot setting up a HT system is as easy as getting a dvd player, reciever and speakers....haha. ;D
hifiluv Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 ok, my setup is front, ctr and sub 8ohms, surround 6 ohms, run by a 6yr SR4200 AV amp, its still alive n kicking... ;D
petetherock Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 I use the JBL control 1, which is the previous series to yours, no issues. 6ohms and 8 ohms are usually ok for mos amps, but it gets dangerous when you try 4ohms esp at loud volumes. There should also be a switch on the Yam amp? You can leave it at 8ohms Good luck and welcome bro
2100 Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 As long as you are not going to whack the volume, 3-4 ohms is not a problem. Just listen carefully for distortion, when it starts to begin to sound coarse and don't play cleanly, back off some notches. Won't blow up. Anyway, with an aging transistor amp, when the power transistors finally go there will be DC and that burns the voice coils nicely anyway. So just use for the rest of the amp's journey and dun worry about burning up.....well its inherited and FOC right? ;D
rockstar1624705852 Posted April 3, 2007 Author Posted April 3, 2007 phew ;D thanks for all your advice guys! guess i'll hook up my satellites now ;)
Genesis Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Just to add a little to what 2100 said....In a not so previous life :P I ran Martin Logan 4 ohm mains with a Denon 3806. Can clearly hear the clipping at high volume, the Denon juiced the ML's at relatively normal vol just fine, but crank it up a bit and no way. I didn't notice the AVR getting overly hot, but the sound was clearly compromised.
