Lucifer Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Hi all, I just moved recently and I've been busy setting up the HT area, but being quite a noob I've run into a few snags, so I'm hoping for some pointers from the resident experts :D Current setup: Sony Bravia Marantz SR4001 Oppo 981 Nintendo Wii Xbox360 StarHub Digital STB Current links: SR4001 to TV via HDMI/Composite(for STB) Oppo 981 to SR4001 via HDMI StarHub STB to SR4001 via composite Nintendo Wii to TV via component Xbox360 to TV via component + digital audio to SR4001 via optical cable My main issue now is that I've found out that sadly, the SR4001 does not passthrough video inputs via HDMI from non-HDMI sources, but audio works, i.e the Oppo981 works fine, but the Xbox360 gives no video input. My questions: 1. Can I connect 2 outputs from the SR4001 to the TV ie will they conflict? I was wondering if I connect a component cable from the "Monitor Out" of the SR4001 to a component input of the TV, will I be able to then get video if I connect all the other devices to the SR4001? 2. If yes to Q1, since the STB is connected to the SR4001 via composite, will there be an image if I only use a component output? Or must I use a corresponding composite output? 3. Or am I doing something wrong? Is the HDMI output supposed to passthrough component inputs?
Doggie Howser Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Depending on the model (I know 7001 and 8001 does), it will upconvert composite/s-vid to component and HDMI. This way you will need one video connection from AV amp to display. You probably need to read the specific model manual to find out if the 4001 does.
Lucifer Posted March 28, 2007 Author Posted March 28, 2007 Well darn looks like the SR4001 only upconverts to component. That being the case, can I connect 2 outputs from the 4001 to the TV, and let it automatically select the appropriate output? Or can there only ever be one output to the TV?

Just hook both component and HDMI to the TV Depending on which input you use on the AV amp, only one of the video outputs will be active. Just a bit more leceh to select the right TV video input that's all.
Lucifer Posted March 28, 2007 Author Posted March 28, 2007 Haha ya ok, thanks! Will try it out tonight
junye Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 So is it working Lucifier? Hmmm i am currently planning for my system and also need advice . mine is a PS2 though. Havent upgrade to Ps3 yet
Jag Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Check with your user manual if the amp u have does component to HDMI conversion. This feature is acutally a feature found in high-end amps and video processors.
Lucifer Posted April 17, 2007 Author Posted April 17, 2007 So is it working Lucifier? Hmmm i am currently planning for my system and also need advice . mine is a PS2 though. Havent upgrade to Ps3 yet Ok here's the deal. For the SR4001, there is only HDMI-HDMI passthrough. Only S-Video can be upconverted to Component. For Composite, you have to use Composite passthrough. A real headache if you ask me! I'm actually quite tempted to get a 7001, but I think my wife will kill me as this 4001 is still so new :( Right now I have 3 sets of cables running from my 4001 to the TV, so messy! Composite for SH Digital Cable, Component for Wii and Xbox360, and HDMI for PS3 and DVD player. really wish I could just use a single HDMI :(
petetherock Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 The upgrade may be worth the domestic spaghetti mess :) There is a bro looking for a $500 amp, maybe you two should hook up? Or wait til there is 1.3v and get that. BTW just 3-4 yrs ago scaling over component video was the reserve of super high end amps, so thats progress :)
Jag Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Just about 5yrs ago, merely component switching was the reserve of flagship amps........... onli amps costing 3k and above had that feature. My starry starry amp was from that era.......... :-[
tsammyc Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Jag, you are falling behind. You must be saving money for something big ;D
Jag Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Hahahaha....... I just can't pump money at this time where the toys are all in a transition stage........... HDMI is still in a mess, need to buy 2 types of players to watch HD-movies from different studios, 1080p DLP is still a small selection.. been bz lately .......... my pj of 3yrs old onli clock about 800hrs hrs........... aiya, once the audio and video is calibrated well, very hard to let go of such great PQ/SQ coz have to recal again if buy new toys......which is kinda difficult considering 24hrs to a day is not enough.....hehehe But a 1080p pj is certainly on the cards.......(of cos it has to fit in my tiny room first.)
junye Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 oh man. and i tot i can connect like this TV | Component | Component SCV ------------------ Marantz 4100 ------------------ PS2 | | HDMI | DVD Player Hmmm means i can't do that unless i get a Marantz 6100? and how much is a 6100?
junye Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 How about this? Amplifier | Component | Component SCV ------------------ LCD TV ------------------ PS2 | | HDMI | DVD Player will this work? What would be the cons of having this set up instead? since the pros is that i dun have to spend more on sr6001
Lucifer Posted April 17, 2007 Author Posted April 17, 2007 I suggest for junye: Get a SR4001 (mine? ;D), connect your SCV, PS2 and DVD player to the amp, then have a component and HDMI out from the amp to your TV. Alternatively, if your DVD player supports component, then you might as well connect it using component as well, then you will just have a single component out from your amp to your TV.
junye Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Thanks Lucifier! I get what you mean. This is my first amplifier so dun really know i should connect. I may get a HDMI dvd player later on. when i got my more $$$$. My ID going to lay the cables in feature wall i got to know how to lay the cables. HDMI HDMI DVD ------------------ Sharp L42-PX5M ------------------ Marantz 4001 -------------- SCV | | PS2 Component | PS2 Ok some future scenarios .. a) if i want to add a recorder to record SCV shows. b) if i buy PS3 (PS3 got HDMI cable) and the bad thing is that my TV has only 2 HDMI inputs. Any suggestions?
junye Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 oops forget to add another component cable from the tv to marantz 4001
Lucifer Posted April 17, 2007 Author Posted April 17, 2007 I doubt you will need more than 2 HDMI inputs for now :D Personally, I decided not to have a feature wall because I was worried that it would be difficult to access the connections on my TV, so I decided to just go ahead with a TV console. (I also just moved into my new place recently) Do remember to tell your ID to make is easy for you to fiddle with your connections, otherwise you'll have a real headache when you want to add or remove connections later! Best thing is to probably lay all the cables first, and those that aren't connected to anything just hide it.
junye Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Lucifier is the Oppo 981 good? 970 got component input. but for what huh? Sorry man i'm really blur abt all this.
