fuhyong Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I am looking for a reasonably cheap way to store and display my collection of almost 500 titles of DVDs. I have initially narrowed it down to the Benno CD tower from Ikea which can hold up to 88 single DVDs each but, to my chagrin, was told that the colour that I want are out of stock and discontinued! The cheapest way to store them is in wallets I suppose, but I loathe to do that as all these are originals and I would like to display them in their case. Does any one have any suggestion where I can get somehing decent and cheap? Thanks!
petetherock Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Bro, have you used the search function in this forum? Check this out: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=42786.0
khewa Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 I would suggest ripping all your 500 titles to a 500GB hard disk. I estimate you will need about 2 500GB hard disk to store your collection. You can then put all your DVDs in the store room and have instant access to 500 titles from the convenience of your couch and your trusty remote. No need to get up to change disks anymore. How's that for the ultimate couch potato ? Of course, you will need to invest in a media server, plenty out there, get one that has network access.
ZackeryZane Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 assuming a title takes up 8gb of hard disk space, then 500 titles would literally translate to a hard disk space of 8 x 500 = 4000 gb or eight 500gb hard disks ?!
yellowhandman Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 assuming a title takes up 8gb of hard disk space, then 500 titles would literally translate to a hard disk space of 8 x 500 = 4000 gb or eight 500gb hard disks ?! yeah, the earlier estimate of 2 x 500GB is completely off, unless you're going to rip your DVDs into DivX.
fuhyong Posted March 19, 2007 Author Posted March 19, 2007 wow.. that's quite a lot of harddisk space to be used to store DVDs. Especially since I don't watch all of them frequently. But that does give me an idea. I should rip those DVDs that my kid watches frequently into the HD. that should saves it from getting scratched from repeated viewing. Thanks for the idea. Still no good suggestion for DVD cabinets though...
