Dear experts,

I am getting a TV for my new house and have been reading the opinions on this forum for a few days. I would like to get a 46" LCD TV and have been looking at the sharp (G7) and sony (X series) models, both of which are editor's choice on cnet reviews. However, they are also both rather expensive, costing about 8K each in best denki and courts.

In order not to make an expensive mistake, could the experts here share your opinions on these 2 choices (which is better) and any other better or cheaper alternatives in the 46" LCD TV arena?

Thanks in advance!

I think you should evaluate the pros n cons of LCD vs Plasma. For myself as I watch movies alot, the benefits of Plasma were a no-brainer with better contrast, no lag on fast moving action scenes. You should take into consideration how near you sit to your TV. CNET reviewed several full HD TVs vs WXGA models and found that unless you sit real close (less than 7 feet) you can't tell the difference. For me, I ended up buying the Pioneer 507.

Thanks for the response guys, for me, I watch SCV quite a lot and I am rather wary of the burn-in effect of the logos on the top right corner of the screen, that's why plasma is out for me.

I do admit that the colors on Sharp looks better, and it has just released a new model. I hope the price of the G7 drops :)

Frankly speaking if you watch alot of SCV, suggest you get a plasma.  You will definitely be disappointed if you pick an LCD.  Burn-in is a thing of the past with currrent generation plasmas.

PQ is the answer.  Don't take my words for it.  Go down to any mega or friendly neighbour hood electronic store and compare.

Indeed, I don't own an LCD or Plasma TV, but when I've stayed in hotels I've seen the following:

Bad tracking of tickers (like on BBC World or CNA)

Digital looking picture (pixelation)

Poor colours (skin tones were way off with compression artifacts)

Now as Francis says, best if you go to the store and compare the different brands, as some will have better image processing capabilities than others. Record some SD TV content on a DVD if you can as some people have reported that the sales guys state they don't have a TV feed. While not as good as testing a live feed it's your next best option. They can't say they don't have DVD players ;).

Thanks for the comments guys. Its certainly helpful and spurred me on to read up on SD PQ on LCD Tvs. One nagging questionI have now is that would SD PQ be better with a Starhub HD set-top box? Or are there any popular upscalers available that can migitate this issue on LCD TVs?

If you're watching HD on an LCD, then it's different.  Otherwise, whether it's cable or ota, sd PQ is being compromised.  Like I've said before, compare before you decide.
