Hi, this is a beginner here who has just gotten the PM4001. Contrary to some preaching here that one should start with speakers first before getting amp, I've done the reverse instead as there are some old speakers at home but no proper stereo amp to start with.

Now, with the Marantz plugged in at home, I'm itching yet again so soon (this is crazy).

The speakers I have don't seem to do justice to it. The set-up does sound decent to an amateur to me, but I guess I'm too spoilt by the showroom demos. Those forward sounding music, wide sound field etc.

Hence now I'd like to enquire on what are the bookshelf speakers I can look at within the entry level. From what I know, at around $300 there are Wharfedale 9.0 and Mordaunt-Short 902i. How well will these match with my amp? I've listened to PM4001 + Wharfedale 9.1, and it's quite a warm combination. Not that it's bad, the warmth does make the vocals richer to me, but it seems that brightness is being compensated and found wanting. Perhaps this can be balanced by tweaking the treble control. So will the 9.1 be a more viable option at $100 more?

I'd appreciate being recommended other models within this range too. I know it's quite limited, but I'm just a beginner not ready to spend much on this yet.

Thanks for any input.

i m using marantz pm7001 with ms906i. i find it gives a wide sound. the cd player was intially cd5001 then upgraded to the azur 640c v2. i find that the azur gives better detail if you like listening to jazz vocals etc. but for an all rounder the cd5001 is better.

bro.... maybe this will work on the Qacoustics 1010 or 1020. from my view i find they r much better than whafedale. price is $300 for 1010 n $400 for 1020. Selling at anson audio in adelphi #01-19. Just passby yesterday , and saw new brand of speakers System Audio from Denmark. Sounds really stunning.... u may spent some time there for audition.
