I'm moving to my new place anytime between March and June (depends on TOP date), so I plan to get an HD set then.

But I was at Courts today and they were selling the Pioneer 427 at a really good price ($3400), complete with the free gifts! Offer ends last day of Feb, I was told.

The only reason I'm hesitant is because a better set might be launched soon. Any idea when the 8th generation Pioneer plasmas will be out?

Also the sales assistant was telling me that burn in is no longer an issue with this set. Is that true? He said they did an in-store test by displaying a static image for several hours. The guy wasn't pushing to make a sale, so I guess there was no reason for him to lie.

By the way I was actually close to getting the Sony X series LCD, which is full HD.

Would appreciate any helpful comments. Thanks!

I would suggest that you wait till IT Show 2007 (8th-11th March) which is just abt 2 weeks away, before you take the plunge..

Read.. confirmed participating leading manufacturers include Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Hitachi, Samsung, LG, BenQ, Toshiba (HD-E1 launch??) and Epson (TW1000 launch??)  ;D  ;D  ;D

bro, serious, WAIT. Ur place is ready in June.  By then not only new models may come out, price of current models will definitely drop.  There is absolutely no reason to buy a plasma in advance.

plus, that $3400 is not a great price even now.

yah, don't buy until you need it...all electronics are like that...prices only go down, not up. if there is a great sale price today, that is probably because they are clearing stock for newer models to come. you may end up paying (slightly) more for the new model, but it will last you longer than if you buy when you don't really need it yet.

especially for plasma/lcd screens...prices have a long way to go down...five years ago a top-of-the-line sony CRT was less than $3000, and that's where plasma/lcd prices are headed, since EVERYBODY has a TV.

I was seriously shopping for a plasma display and was tempted by the Pioneer sale then, but received the same advice to wait until after CNY if I can.

LCD and Plasma display prices are expected to have heavy discounts from March when stores generally reopen and hungry for 'Kai Gong' business.  Also, manufacturers normally start to introduce their new models in the 2nd half of the year for Summer and Christmas sales, so retailers would want to clear their current stocks and factory runs before they re-tool for the new models.

I'm curious about the new Panasonic 42", 50" and 55" plasma displays which are supposed to have much lower costs (50" PDP for under S$5000???)

Wait unless u need it.  The upcoming samsung 81 series LCD TV creates a lot of hypes recently.  The problem is Plasma/LCD are still relatively new technology-  there is always new improved pq TV coming out each year.

My SD 42 plasma still serves me well.  Do not plan to upgraade for the next 2-3 years...

Humph, at that price you'd get 2.5 plasmas for the price I paid for mine...  :'(

But seriously, they're right, if you place isn't ready, don't buy in advance.  Prices only go down, rarely up, and also with new models coming out soon by then, the price of current models will go even lower.  And unlike that $99K 103" plasma, you don't really have to book in advance, delivery is probably within a week of ordering.

The one instance of price going up was a story KEC's Clarence told me: there was a special deal where $800 worth of NTUC vouchers were being given with a Panasonic plasma, and he had a customer who was really nitpicky and waffling, and kept worrying about whether if he bought at that time, whether the price would drop in the next month or two when he would finally take delivery, so he never booked or paid a deposit.  The following month, the special deal price remained the same, but it was now only $400 worth of vouchers, so when this joker went back and found out, he kicked up a fuss, saying that Clarence should have "looked after his interest" or some other rubbish.  ::)

.. and at your price you'd get 2 plasmas for the price I paid for mine, back in 2000  ;)  over 7 yrs price has depreciated to 20% of the original value, pretty much like car scrap value  ;D

If I were the  OP, I will even wait for the place to be ready, renovated, moved in, and even possible wait for another while to buy.  By then a 65" 1080p panel should have dropped to a reasonable level  :)
