petetherock Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 Hi bros, I have been following the parallel R6 thread in SG which has since been complicated by brothers who travel to China frequently and hence contribute their purchases from there. Firstly after a recent trip there, I must say its pretty amazing, the prices, but there is a minefield of fakes and even some of the stuff, I can't 100% tell you they are original. Furthermore the penalty for being caught with fakes is not good, as many of you will know. On that note, let me tell you about FAB a music / DVD shop with brances, one in Chao Yang district and a big one in WanFuJing district, Pacific Plaza I believe is the one I went. Good selection and v v decent prices. They all carry a silver tag on their boxes, which is supposed to indicate they are original. On a recent purchasing spree, I found: -Cars 25RMB -Miami Vice 30RMB -Ambush (Andy Lau) 25RMB -Banquet 25RMB PS -- avoid the cheapest version as they tend to be DD 2.0 only Also when buying check that you have the English language versions. PPS -- if you hate having subtitles and ads avoid these. and plenty more (sorry I don't know how to post pics) more brothers will be more updated. Their music selection is equally comprehensive as well, and the staff are very helpful. Hope this helps. P
YANG Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 "They all carry a silver tag on their boxes, which is supposed to indicate they are original." Those silver labels can be easily fabricated if you are unluckily patronizing a bogus retailer. So far what i know is that, WARNER/UNIVERSAL titles are packed in a case that have those reflective transparent logos of WB. Anyway... A nice effort to start this thread. Brudder R6 EXPERT, can now share R6 release info with all in this thread.
dbchoong Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Furthermore the penalty for being caught with fakes is not good, as many of you will know. If I'm not wrong, even bringing originals into Sg have to be declared (in theory). :)
R6_Expert Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Hi bros, I have been following the parallel R6 thread in SG which has since been complicated by brothers who travel to China frequently and hence contribute their purchases from there. What is "Public Domain"? Copyright items no longer get protected by copyright law, anyone may release Public Domain titles legally. However, the definition of "Public Domain" is completely different in China and USA. In China, 20 years is the limit. In US, see here http://www.copyright.cornell.edu/training/Hirtle_Public_Domain.htm You see a lot of oldies DVD released in China legally, without paying copyright fee and the content are direct copied from overseas releases. Also, copyright unclaimed items might also fell under "Public Domain" in China. Say, a C-Grade US action film, where the copyright holder doesn't bother to release it in China, moreover, nobody claims the copyright in the territory of mainland China, may fall under "Public Domain"
jayson1624705825 Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 in china, the fakes are so realistic. sometimes the copyright owner even find it difficult to tell the so called "public domain" applied only in china and taiwan. donno if you will have difficulty bringing to spore. However the R6 titles are only S$10- and the old titles S$ 5-6-. in spore So why go to so much trouble ;D ;D
R6_Expert Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 But if you limit your selection of R6 DVD to titles from CAV Warner, Excel Media, CAV Thrakal (quit already), Fox/Zoke Culture, Opus Media and carefully select the rest. you shouldn't get anything fake.
YANG Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 An undeniable harsh truth is that, unfortunately quite a percentage of singaporean shoppers would not bother to look into details when they make small value purchases. As long as the goods they are looking at is cheap, and "branded" looked like real, they just pay the money and walk off lah... They don't bother whether is this a original copyrighted copy or not...such example can be seen with the popularity of china imported cds...
R6_Expert Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 "Public Domain" titles exist in US too. but with a stringent restriction - In 2007, only films released before 1923 can be freely reproduced. films between 1923 - 1977, only if copyright never get renewed and no longer exsist. in China, Public Domain simply means 20 years ago. So in 2007, any film released before 1987 can be reproduced legally by anyone but this will change in the future. Four pictures below... Pic-1 is Ben Hur from Boying (Public Domain 公版), content is direct copied from R3 DVD Pic-2 is the back cover of Boying release (you see 像公字, mean it is a registered public domain video) Pic-3 is Original CAV Warner release of R6 Ben Hur (standard edition) Pic-4 is Original CAV Warner release of R6 Ben Hur (4 Disc Special Edition)
petetherock Posted February 7, 2007 Author Posted February 7, 2007 That has a ring of truth. For 'fun' typ shows where I just want to watch maybe once or twice, I am happy and v impressed with the stuff I got from China. But as for really nice sound effect shows, I still prefer certain editions, with certain sound formats and languages even (eg Cantonese). Wow R6, you really know your stuff. Might venture to get some more in future. petetherock Posted November 27, 2007 Author Posted November 27, 2007 Just bought the new Jason Statham and Jet Li movie 'Rogue Assasin' in China and 'Brothers' starring Andy Lau
petetherock Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 With R6 expert's help, I found a whole building where DVDs and music CDs are sold at distributer prices and price is really impressive. Plus a 20% card for 30RMB, it really made my day. 5-6 floors of goodness. The don't ship to Singapore but at 23RMB before discount for the latest English movies, thats fine. 北京宣武区马连道 北京音像大厦 BTW this whole district also has a nice tea shops, excellant service and prices again.
petetherock Posted November 2, 2008 Author Posted November 2, 2008 Someone asked me about buying discs in China and Beijing in particular, so here is the thread again:
DizzyD1624705734 Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 petetherock i dont mean to hijack this thread but did you spot any Blu Ray....I bought Infernal Affairs Trilogy and Tsai Chin Concert for RMB 300 in Dong Guan...That is 75 each and they are BD!! The discs are black on the underside and I am quite sure these are the freshed P goods from the glorious great china..I shall post some pics on a new thread once I have some time. cheers
petetherock Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 I saw BR discs and they cost 35-50SING$ The fake ones cost less but I doubt they are really BR. Very few folks can afford BR, only the foreigners.
Guest francis woo Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 A sure fire way to test whether these are genuine BRs is to put it a DVD player. If it's playable, then you know it's a fake.......... ;D
DizzyD1624705734 Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Hi I have already tested in PS3....DTS MA detected and AVC detected. thanks
