Guest francis woo Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Couple of weeks back, I was in Hong Kong Mongkok at one of those hi-fi shop and they were selling the Dynaudion Focus 1.4 and C 1 for hkg$14,000 (sng$2,800) and hkg$30,800 (sng$6,160). I am not sure how much the 1.4 is but a shop here in Adelphi was selling the C 1 for $9,000.00 when I visited last weekend. The difference in pricing is staggering. With the savings, you can fly to Hong Kong and stay a few days there and still get the same speakers. Appreciate owners of Dynaudio comment on the sound quality of the Focus 1.4 and C 1.

Yeah man, go HK and lug it back if possible. Actually quite a number of audio stuff in HK is quite cheap even without haggering over the price. The Harbeth SHL-5 is $5k before discount. C1 sound is a bit on the acquired taste. You also need high-quality, not-etched amplification as I find them to be on the bright side. Say Plinius?
bolts1624705732 Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 I full concur with your observation after visiting the hi-fi shops in HK. It's really cheap compared to SG. Sometimes up to 40% cheaper. However, freight cost may eat signifcantly into your cost savings especially for speakers and also, there's no local warranty. If you can hand-carry back, the savings is BIG.
Guest francis woo Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 I think even if you factor in the freight cost, it will still be a hugh saving. Anyway, these Dynaudio speakers are considered book-shelf type, so no problem checking in under fragile package at the airport.
2100 Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Recently went back and bought the Harbeth C7es3 for SGD$2.5k Wah lao, that means I have been quoted too high for my SHL-5 even after considering it is before discount. ;D I am very surprised that it is so cheap over there! Believe it is 4.5k here?
bolts1624705732 Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 I saw a pair of wood-verneer thiel cs 1.6 going for S$2,600 there. nearly 1K savings. :P
slkk Posted February 3, 2007 Posted February 3, 2007 Hi Bolts, My name is Sammy and I'm from Sound Decisions. Just to let you know that we sell CS1.6 with standard veneer finish for $3200.00 a pair. This is for your info only. Thanks.
Guest francis woo Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Hi Slkk, in that case, why is there still a $600.00 difference in pricing!!!
slkk Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Hi Francis, many reasons why some people do what they do. Just like, I'm sure you've read, Price Japan sells Mitsubishi projector for an unbelievable price!! Is it prudent to buy from them? Nobody can answer that question except oneself. Kind of willing buyer, willing seller kind of thing. I would love to answer your questions in person. may not have all the answers to all your questions but no harm having a friendly chat. I could only give you my answers from my point of view only and this may not wholly address your concerns. My number is 98738118. call me please. Thanks.
2100 Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Francis, $600 is not that much a difference considering that you do get local dealer support. This matters a lot for some, esp if he/she is really into hifi. You may get a lot of friendly and useful tips and even assistance. The kind of relationship between dealer and customer, of course, is different from shop to shop. But there are some in which the difference is well into couple thousands. Then I guess the $$$ matters more. ;D Considering that some photography stuff could be as much as 20-30% cheaper there too, then a trip could be very useful!
petetherock Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Hi Francis, any chance you can give some shops for me to visit, I might go there in June or so, and will hope to get a decent cd player / transport (around 5-600S$) and some stereo speaker options, possibly the Focus Audio series. Thanks Pete
Guest francis woo Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Pete, the place ot go for hi-fi stuff is at Sai Yeung Choi Str at MongKok. You can get off at a Mongkok mtr station and look for the str signage exit. You will probably get all the stuff you need at either Grancastle or Yau Shing Comm. Centres. Sammy, tks for the invite. Will call to chat.

But, no local warranty support if it fails back in Singapore. For Canon lenses, same price as Singapore. But, this is because they have international warranty.

petetherock Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Be still my heart!, can't wait til June! Thanks! What about cameras - sorry OT and say GPS units - looking for the NikonD40
Guest francis woo Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Guys, you will find and get all video and audio stuff at this particular location, low end to high end. HD-dvd and Blu-ray can be found along Shantung str at an basement alley where many high-end stuff are situated.
petetherock Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Thanks Francis, do you need to bargain a lot? My canton not great.... Lastly do you all hand carry back or ship?
Guest francis woo Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Pete, I do bargain alot as I'm a cantonese, so no problem with that. I normally hand carry cd or dvd players and bookshelf speakers. If slightly bigger items, i check them in at the airport. I once even considered checking in the maggi 1.6 qr ($2,600.00) but decided to hold so that I can save to get the Dynaudion C 1.
petetherock Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Guys can I be a little pedantic, can anyone type the street names in Chinese or something, then I can print it out and show the cab driver please? "Dor Jie" - is that right? :)

Maybe that's why K*** Audio had to sell their stuff so cheap (relatively)....cos of the "excellent" local dealer support ;)
petetherock Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Francis and other bros Do you all know anyone who can ship back home? Thinking of that instead, if I really go mad on buying. I will try and make a trip in May.
ks Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Francis and other bros Do you all know anyone who can ship back home? Thinking of that instead, if I really go mad on buying. I will try and make a trip in May. pete u quite strange leh ??? 1st u are very diligent looking for speakers for the best bang of the buck. then u make a trip in May to buy hifi. unless one is getting a special or liimited edition component, or its selling at a few hundred cheaper than in Sg, there really is no point making a trip just to buy hifi components. Like i told u before, u also hv to take into acct freight n paying gst. the last time i brought back my stuff, i ended paying a few hundred for gst. if u ship back, then u gotta find someone who is willing to help u freight back ur goods, and so there is freight charges incurred+gst. As for hifi components that require AC, u should check if the voltage if its the same as Sg. if its like 220v, then will it have a shorter lifespan, if operating on Sg 240V AC? Think carefully of ur needs n ur budget la.
petetherock Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Hi KS The trip isn't for hi fi. I am on my way back from USA, so a stopover to check out the local scene is in order, don't you think so? And whilst I am in USA, I will also consider carrying a set of MMGs home actually. Plus some power conditioners. Its all part of a conference meeting in USA bro, nothing unusual to look up the local scene before I decide on my final buy right? pete u quite strange leh ??? 1st u are very diligent looking for speakers for the best bang of the buck. then u make a trip in May to buy hifi. unless one is getting a special or liimited edition component, or its selling at a few hundred cheaper than in Sg, there really is no point making a trip just to buy hifi components. U said u might make a trip in may, so i tot u purposely make a trip there to shop. Bring MMGs back? have u tried out the sound to decide if u will buy them over the MAs or whatever u have been auditioning? Sorry ah, i kinda lost track of what u were auditioning thought i tot u were quite set of the MAs.
petetherock Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 The MMGs would be an experiement, if I get them. MAs impressed me the most, but hey since I am in US, I might check out a few more things. MMGs were always on my mind, and at 600USD, I am willing to consider them 'blind' P ok, u din mention the hongkong stop was en-route.
