BuRR06 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Currently interested in getting a AMOI 37" LCD . It has been on the market for quite a while and i was wondering if any of the current users of this LCD have any feedback? wanna get some 1st hand reviews before buying it... THANKS !
Doggie Howser Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Depends on what you want it for. Normal SDTV is not great on this TV, with its PixelWorks deinterlacing/scaling engine. So regular off the air TV is bad. SCV is slightly better over composite but you really have to sit abt 2x screen widths or more to not see the over defined jaggies/scaling. But feed it any HD source and it really shines. It handles 1080p from component and HDMI. In fact, after playing my PS3 and HD DVDs on it, I ended up upgrading my projector to 1080p as well. I don't think it does 1080p24 though, but to be fair, I don't have any source to test it with. I think there was one user who tried (MichaelTan) but I never remembered if he was successful.
eggz Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Where's a good place to demo or buy Amoi TVs? I don't see them at the usual places eg. Best, Courts. thanks!

Think it is sold exclusively at BIG (in HarborFront) When I saw it, they demo-ed it with an upscaling player over component. I switched it from 1080i to NTSC over component (to simulate SD) and it looked decent. I have used my Momitsu over DVI 1080i, XB360 HDDVD at 1080i over component and PS3 over HDMI at 1080p as well as HD MediaBox (PixelMagic) MB-100 at 1080p over component and HDMI. It really shines.
MC_Hammer Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 think they are still selling at $2499, Think the Pioneer 427 at $3000 is a better deal
Doggie Howser Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 think they are still selling at $2499, Think the Pioneer 427 at $3000 is a better deal The Pioneer is a 480p plasma? If it is the same Amoi as the one I have, that is a 1080p native res LCD.
BuRR06 Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 How bout Input from PC... have u tried?? i intend to watch many of my DIVX videos / anime from my comp. Will it be alright? Price of the Amoi 37" at BIG haven really dropped at all for the past few months...SIAN. Must be all the hype generated from full HD capable screens.
BuRR06 Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Choice between the Toshiba 37WL68 and the Amoi 37" ??? My budget is arnd 2500 or lesser preferred. Only major advantage that the Amoi has over the Toshiba is the 1080p. The Toshiba on the other hand is cheaper (MEGA DISCOUNT STORE) and a Japan Brand. what do u guys think ?

Still is the cheapest native full HD 1080p panel today :) If you use VGA, the max res supported is 1366x768. I haven't tested it since I don't use a PC with it, but I do use the XBox360 over VGA on 1365x768 and it works pretty well. Very crisp. I find XBox360 at this resolution with VGA looks BETTER than 1080p on component. But that's probably cos most X360 apps are native 720p and upscaling actually makes the graphics look worse. I know there were a number of PC enthusiast reviews in China who tested the Amoi with 1080p with DVI/HDMI connections and you can get full HD 1080p resolution. That said, DIVX is low res so not really gonna look as great. Depends on the software used to rescale I suppose. I do watch some DIVX upscaled to 1080p using the MediaBox HD-MB100 and it does look pretty decent.
Quest88 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 well, h.264 videos/anime is downloadable nowadays.. that's why i'm on anyway. think 1080p via PC will look great on it.
BuRR06 Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 alrighty then...seems like the AMOI is the way to go ! will do up more research on the net. so far all positive feedback...any complains??? haha
Quest88 Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 just my 2 cents since i also looked at the amoi (40") extensively. i think most important thing you got to ask yourself is: based on viewing distance, can you tell the difference between 720p and 1080p? 2nd question is whether most of your sources are 1080p? if the answer is yes to both, i think your choice is pretty set! if answer is no to first, then maybe can consider some other brand. the problem is cos amoi haven't release any new models lately (correct me if i am wrong) so i feel they lag behind abit in terms of contrast compared to the newer models. wanna read more reviews on it i think avsforum has a very long thread. some of their problems such as about dead pixel may not be so common here since they had to freight, etc. however, i also recall reading about some funny problem about on/off the tv while pc still connected or something. can't remember exactly though.
Jeremy1624705846 Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 think they are still selling at $2499, Think the Pioneer 427 at $3000 is a better deal Anyway, price is always falling. I heard news that this coming May or June, they are going to drop some more. Wait as you can is my advise.
Jeremy1624705846 Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 Pioneer going to drop or AMOI ??? What I know is across the board all lcd & plasma. Info from 1 of my friend's dealer.
HT102 Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Anyway, price is always falling. I heard news that this coming May or June, they are going to drop some more. Sounds like there will be major promotions to coincide with MediaCorp's launch of HDTV broadcasting.
