Hi,

After a long trial of SH HDTV and the final pricing >$15.50 for a mere 2 channel HDTV content, what are your opinions?

Is it truly value-for-money? 2 channels Discovery and NGC both of which do not really benefit from HD anyway. Even with 5.1 channel audio, what do we get? Surround sound of birds chirping behind and other documentary shows...

Don't seem to be of much value to us. EPL won't be on HD format and neither would the movie channels.

I am also disappointed with the pricing of the equipment, having to BUY the equipment which mean we will be stuck only to SH content for 2 years even if we do not sign up with the contract, there is no other use of the STB which we would be required to buy.

Maybe this would mean more sense if more content becomes available via Starhub to justify the pricing or the pricing lowers after the inital phrase... else HDTV will not really take off.

This is why Singapore needs more competition in the area of Telecommunications and TV Programming.

My 2 cent worth...

Michael

makes you wonder just how dumb starhub is. no concept of marketing at all. by launching HD when they clearly have not lined up any compelling content (i.e. sports or movies) is simply stupid, because the first impression given is that HD is worthless.

considering that they have zero competition when it comes to launching HD, they should have worked harder to line up the content, and not launch until they had it. what's the rush?

I'm not happy about paying $15 for just two channels, but they are great!! I'm a NGC/Discovery fan and man seeing Nemo like clownfish in 1080i is fantastic for me. Also just watched the NGC documentary on Singapore. Can see all the age spots on LKY's face. It may be expensive, but I'm all onboard for this one.

If you ask me, its to get some HD content out ahead of Singtel's IPTV HD launch in March/April

pardon me but i think you HD trial users are 得了便宜还卖乖. been staying with SCV for 11 years when they first launch in Tampines back in 1996, but they never bother to inform me when they launch the trial. thats the result of monopoly cable TV provided, the loyal subscriber are sh!t compare to the non-subscriber.

IMHO, documentary are the main reason why we need HD, to see the real beauty of nature world. what else is more beautiful than the mother nature herself? where else demands more shades of color? EPL? so i can see the player's face or his shirt? nah...i paid $86 for SCV and the most of the time i stay in the documetary channels, everything else is bonus.

I probably wont bother with when mediacorp actually launch thiers, i could hardly tune to MCTV after all these year with SCV. the only thing i watch are the news , what else does MCTV has that the SCV dont? local drama?

to each his own, $15 is well worth the cost for HD documentary, but i would wait for the dust to settle. SCV is known to give out crazy offer when they are desperate--just see why they launch HD 2 days ago.

Read that M2B TV is launching HD in March for a few channels, and they are having a promotion of 2 months subscriptions with 3 months free. Might be worth taking a look when know more about the content.

A friend of mine signed up for the HD box without signing up for the HD channels. He commented that it showed improvement even on the normal channels, probably because of the HDMI connection.

even without the HDMI it is much better.

of course, the chip inside is the latest generation, the most exepnsive STB chip, while the other boxes use the cheapest.

yet, there is no way I am going to pay S$300 for a STB box.

I just got the SH HD set top for $49.75 after using the starhub $50 voucher.

Those who have the SH reward points can redeem the point for $50 voucher and use it offset the price of the HD set top box.

1700 for $50 voucher, so if u have 3400 points, basicaly the HD set top box is FOC. (u must sign up the 12 mths contract).

Don't notice any audio drop out issue on my box. Can you describe it?

Periodically, the audio sound from the digital out will just disappear from 1 to 2 seconds and then recover after that.  Problem's been there since day 1.

All channels, or just the HD ones? Both optical and coaxial outputs?

I haven't had that yet either.

Must I also sign up for the $15.50 HD plan in order to attain the box for $99.75 (12mth contract)?

In other words, can i just buy the HD-STB @ $99.75 (12 mth contract)?

u no need to sign up the $15.50 HD plan, but you need to have the cable plan of min $33 (basic teir + other programs > $33) in order to purchase the HD STB at $99.75. Also u must retain your cable plan min at $33 through out the 12 mths contract.

The problem is apparent for me on all channels.  I've been using the Optical out all this while.

Must say I haven't noticed it. I'm using HDMI out for digital audio out most of the time, but do have the optical digital audio out hooked up as well. Will listen more to that to see if it is still there. Perhaps the current box has cured it?

Spoke to their tech support guys and they maintained that the set-top box now being sold is the exact same one used during the trial.  Anyway, I'm waiting for their response on my complaint and hopefully I get a new replacement box instead.

Just got an audio problem. It went for a second during the Wigan v Everton match, then came back for a bit and then nada. Had to turn the main power off to reboot the box to get the sound back. I'm using the optical out too.

the HD stb will be count as the main and 1st stb. Ur current old stb (either the old or digital type) will consider 2nd stb, which mean, if u want to keep it, u will need to pay the full rental fee of $10.40 for the old black box or $12.40 for the digital stb.

I return my old black stb to them as i dont need it any more.

For existing Starhub customers under a contract, there is no promo pricing. Need to pay 300$ for the box. Found it out today when I went to get the HD box. Decided not to get it.

Its not worth paying that much for just 2 HD channels. Starhub will need to do better than this.

With their promo are they expecting new customers to get Starhub, just for the two HD channels ?? Dont think so.

A let down by Starhub
