2100 Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Anybody finds that the woofer very very difficult to push in, as compared to conventional ported designs? And it sounds EXTREMELY TIGHT! OMG!!! :o Even for deep bass < 40Hz, kick drums.
hosm Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Just missed my chance for the MO for the SB12 :( Otherwise I would haved got myself the Piano black one.... ;D I like tight bass. ;D
rahul Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I am also eyeing this sub. Too bad missed the MO :( Hopefully Monsoon will get it in at a decent price. Whats the difference between PB / SB naming ? From their website, PB12 plus looks like one beast of a sub. SB12 plus is much smaller in size. Is it much lesser in performance as well ?
Quest88 Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 monsoon still not yet get their act together. want another MO? haha
2100 Posted January 5, 2007 Author Posted January 5, 2007 Lesser performance... well that depends on what you are aiming for in your audio system. It is a fair bit different from Home Theatre. Just think about it, 425 watts of power, quite efficient woofer (not sure what's the sensitivity rating).... unless your main system is like those which can play very loudly like Wilsons, Genesis, Revels, Avalons, Avantgardes and you have like > 200wpc amps in a very big room, i fail to see why you'd need more power/sound output. :)

louco73 Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 And actually if you can buy those stuff, i doubt you will buy SVS! ;D Genesis 400 speakers L/R, Genesis IM8200 at the rear, Genesis IM5200 waiting for 7.1 AVR, check Bryston 14B ST 600W+/channel power amp, check New SVS, check Note I didn't buy the speakers or the amp brand new. I buy things that seem good value for money and the SVS PB12/Plus seemed like a good deal. Sure I'd love a Genesis Sub, but this will suffice. Ok, I don't own high end Genesis stuff, so maybe you can get me there ;)
2100 Posted January 5, 2007 Author Posted January 5, 2007 Well, actually I am running only 18W of SET juice to my main speakers. ;D No need to have so much power, just grates the ears only if it is not clean/musical.
rahul Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 monsoon still not yet get their act together. want another MO? haha Yeah another MO ! That will be sweet :) 2100 - I get your point. Its just that people say..you can never have enough of good BASS. I wont be greedy. SB12 plus should be enough for me. ;D

I wont be greedy. SB12 plus should be enough for me. ;D long time ago my friend DIY a giant subwoofer with two 18" drivers and 2kw build-in amp. frequency range is 40hz-5hz/-3dB as he said. i auditioned once and i felt the bass is real GOOD (though not integrated well with the mains) and too powerful. chest felt choked and hard to breath. somewhat got kinda vomit feel. only turned to 9'clock and the room, no the whole block was kinda vibrating. wondering if i turned to 12' clock it would instantly blow me and chair away. hehe...it was too more than enough i guess. integration with mains is always the most important for me. was thinking to get a REL Stadium III. but of course have to move to a bigger house first.

Agreed that you don't need that much power for typical listening. My 50W Teac does a great job. However, the biggest improvement is with bass. It's very noticeable. The other thing is I will never have to buy a new amp again, irrespective of what speakers I get, as the Bryston can drive anything.
basspundit Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Haven't pushed the SB-12 driver, but i did try pusing the B&W ASW 675. Extremely difficult, including the surround. I wonder if its a property of sealed boxes, where the air has nowhere to go? I've also tried pushing in a passive radiated sub, easier than the sealed box. I think its more of the property of a sealed acoustic suspension design. Coz I plugged the ports of my speakers and its real difficult to push it, even though the drivers are just 5.25" inch type.
bolts1624705732 Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 You got any good CDs with strong bass to recommend? I wanna test the SB12+. ;D Not used to the bass...too clean....Can't really hear it sometimes. Can only feel the thump thump on the sofa..

A cheap one would be Patricia Barber methodologies whcih is her latest disc, get at NDV, i think less than 20. Just 2 or 3 tracks, but quite a nice disc also.
petetherock Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 How about Jennifer Warnes - the Hunter album - 1st 2 songs? Any reviews SB 12+ owners?
bolts1624705732 Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Thanks guys. Will look out for it. The sub produces tight, clean bass....a bit too clean....not used to it. Also kills every sub I've heard in those HT packages from yamaha, sony and pioneer. And my gain on the sub is only one quarter up. Anything more, I get a headache.....and my ears hurt. I tried using the Aivia phase test to try to merge the sub with the main speakers....basically, I cannot hear any difference at all settings. So, end up not setting it at all. Got some strange peaks and dips that I think need to be cured....probably room problems....dunno how to do this yet. Will get some discs and test more.

HI A few queries about your sub: - How does it integrate with your front speakers while listening to music ? - What crossover frequency do you use? - Do you think it would work well with decent standmount speakers ? Thanks
bolts1624705732 Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 HI A few queries about your sub: - How does it integrate with your front speakers while listening to music ? - What crossover frequency do you use? - Do you think it would work well with decent standmount speakers ? Thanks 2 cents worth: 1. Not easy to integrate with music. Some details are lost due to the higher output of the sub masking details. I turn off the sub for acoustic music without drums. But, turn it on for pop tracks and DVDs. But, overall, it's better to have the sub because my main spks can only go down to 42Hz, but, starts to run out of steam below 70Hz. I can barely hear double bass iwithout the sub. 2. Currently 80Hz. Sub starts to bottom out at below 30Hz in my room, although it's rated to go down to 20Hz. 3. Your standmount must be able to go down to 120Hz. Then you can set the x-over on the sub at 120Hz.
2100 Posted January 14, 2007 Author Posted January 14, 2007 I hit the limit of the SB-12 too yesterday, somemore only with drums ie. midbass. Looks like Home Theatre guys are not the only ones playing loud. ;D
Darthfunk Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Btw at what level are you guys putting the gains at? Iam putting it slightly above 9 o'clock.
bolts1624705732 Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Btw at what level are you guys putting the gains at? Iam putting it slightly above 9 o'clock. same. Around +3db above my main speakers when measured with the sound meter.
2100 Posted January 14, 2007 Author Posted January 14, 2007 Btw at what level are you guys putting the gains at? Iam putting it slightly above 9 o'clock.
