InnocentBlood Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 i am using a paradigm PDR-10 and it has served me well since Feb 2003. recently, about 2 weeks ago, i noticed that the bass coming out of it has been somewhat distorted... esp during heavy bass scenes... some kind of low 'rumbling'... like the sub is all of a sudden unable to handle the bass, y'know? that kind of "distorted noise" wasn't there previously all this while and i do not turn up the volume too loudly on my system. is this a result of normal wear and tear? can i get this fixed or do i have to think about getting another sub? i'd appreciate any input on this, thank u :)
petetherock Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Hi there I had a KEF 30B, and a similar thing happened, so I took it to the dealer. He found the woofer had worked its way loose, and tightened the screws and it was okay. I am not sure if its the same problem, but I hope this helps.
dbchoong Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Possibility that the driver's rubber/foam suspension might have given way. Remove the grill and inspect the driver. :)
InnocentBlood Posted January 5, 2007 Author Posted January 5, 2007 i feel stupid to say this but honestly speaking, i was unable to remove the grill and i didn't want to force and break anything. thanks for the input guys and i do hope that the problem can be fixed with a simple tightening of the screws or replacing the foam... i bought the sub @ KEC. i'll give them a call later to see if they can help me. or if anybody here knows about fixing such things please contact me as i could really use your help :)
synthesis1624705793 Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 If you unable to remove the grill, try to remove the plate amp and inspect from behind. Oh.. unplug the power cord first. ;)
hosm Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Hi, I have a PDR 10, ( which was given to me, by my friend ) The foam edge was broken when I got it. I got it repaired at Martin ( a bit more X than orther place ) abt $35 The grills of the PDR 10 cannot be removed. As such you have to remove the plate amp to asscess from the rear. one way to check the foam condition without opening the rear is to shine a bright torch light through the front grill and see if you can see the condition of the foam surround. hope this helps
f_spider Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I had d same set , used it for a yr , 1 day played d race scene from star wars ......... D whole sub driver gave way , produces a "flubbing" sound ............. Traded it in wif a dealer........ Learned my lessons , now i m using a 15" driver sub ;D
SiriuslyCold Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Innocentblood you might want to call up Asia Sound Eqpt and ask for the technical support number & location - good guys and they'll be able to fix your PDR10
InnocentBlood Posted January 5, 2007 Author Posted January 5, 2007 Innocentblood you might want to call up Asia Sound Eqpt and ask for the technical support number & location - good guys and they'll be able to fix your PDR10 bro i just got off the phone with Winston from tech support and he predicted that i might have to do 'coning' (?)... anyway they don't do coning and they only replace the entire unit which would cost about $160... he said there's a hop is SLS that does this 'coning' thing... i asked if i could just bring my unit down to their office in Jln Pemimpin for them to take a look - just in case i may not have described the problem accurately and he said they could do that... what's 'coning' anyway? am i using the right term here? as much as possible, i want to avoid replacing the entire unit. he said based on the age of the subwoofer, it's highly likely that i would have to do this 'coning' thing...
petetherock Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Hi I had my REL Quake re-coned before Like bro DB said, it maybe a surround foam / rubber issue, so they change that. If you want to keep the sub for a long time, its not a bad option - if its the problem My REL was pretty good with the new surrounds from the newer series! Look hard at the sub and see if you want to keep it long term bro...
dbchoong Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Why not try martin (burlington sq) like hosm did? Cost him $35. :)
InnocentBlood Posted January 5, 2007 Author Posted January 5, 2007 Why not try martin (burlington sq) like hosm did? Cost him $35. :) do you mean Martin Audio? i'll get the number and give them a call...
Jag Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Definately the foam surrounding the driver cone. Paradigms of that time used foam and disintegrated quickly in our hot and humid climate. Get it reconed cheaply and it will work fine. Thus, I always advise frens not to buy speakers or subs that use foam to secure the cone to the driver basket.
kMan1624705733 Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Alternative at Tai Cheong Radio Svc at SLT. Replaced my PDR10 surround there for $30 with 3 mths warranty. Looks like a common problem with PDR series.
InnocentBlood Posted January 6, 2007 Author Posted January 6, 2007 i just sent mine in to Martin today - should be ready by Tuesday. just wanted to say thanks to all of you who contributed with your valuable input :)
