I am looking at setting up a network of music players to stream my MP3, WAV to multiple rooms. I've read quite a number of posts on both Sonos and Squeezebox. I am making a purchase real soon so would appreciate if fellow forumers can help comment:

1. Remote control: Sonos beats Squeezebox hands down.

2. Multi-zone: They both work well but Sonos is comparatively easier to setup than Squeezebox.

3. Networking: Squeezebox has out-of-the-box wired and wireless mode. Whereas Sonos is only wireless but can be tweaked to wireless.

4. Pricing: Sonos is more expensive but has built-in amp, considering the basic of 2 entry level players and 1 remote. Squeezebox can attach to any amp.

5. Sound quality: I am not sure

6. Universal remote: Sonos can't be controlled via universal remote. Squeezebox has no problem.

7. There is no known third party plug-ins that can do what Sonos controller can do.

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

just decided to respond since i looked at the two before. :)

1. price of sonos remote alone is already more than squeezebox.

2. probably true

3. no experience with sonos setup

4. sonos has a model without amp now if i'm not wrong. but even the one without amp is still alot more expensive.

5. hard to compare since price points also different.

6. correct

7. you can possibly get a pda to replicate what the sonos remote does, by controlling the slimdevices server via http over wireless network.

don't forget for either of these devices you need to get a compatible PC or NAS.

Squeezebox displays the time and doubles up as an accurate alarm clock that syncs to a time server ;D

To me, the price points are very different. If you go to the Sonos website, it links to product reviews by Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek and NYT. Whereas squeezebox has a link to Stereophile :)

But if you can afford it, sure go for the Sonos.

Sonos by defult not support Chiness font.

Sonos Z80 can work alone without Z100 as a zone player.

Sonos are wire and wireless bultin

sonos control is like web interface works like a min pc and control the zone player and sonos can only br control by this way.

SB have only one think in mind, let play the MUSIC just like turn on the FM and insert a cd ,but in the digital way.

Sonos is a system not a ads on ,so it have not work with other by far ( Bose ) get wat I means ?

I recently find my self considering the original question in this thread... Sonos or Squeezebox. I think it's because I'm itchy from the need to try a new gadget... hehe.

I have two squeezeboxes at home, a SB3 and a SB Boom. None of them are working at this time because I'm quite sick of the need to run the software on a PC that is always on or for my case, when run through my ReadyNAS, it does not support itunes playlist properly. Seems that over the years that I have owned this, I have to tweak and tweak and install new firmware etc.

As I get older, I'm wondering if the Sonos is an easier way for me. The computing guts are built in, so no server software is required. However, I wonder if the sound is decent from the Play:3 or Play:5 system. Any current users with any thoughts to share?

That's probably not counting the time taken to configure the Squeezebox. I just spent another 4 hours just trying to get the Squeezecenter to ready my iTunes playlist. Turns out that I need to remove an extra "/" character in the library config that the squeezecenter automatically adds.

Now I can see playlists, I can see individual songs.... No albums, No genre, No artists.

Seriously would go the Sonos route and solve my headache with this stupid software that I've been tweaking for the past 3 years.

I have been using Sonos for a few years and its dead simple to use. You can store all your music in a NAS and use the iPhone app to control the Sonos. No need to install or configure any software, everything just works. Plus you can link a few Sonos together and they all play the same music simultaneously, so the whole house can rock. Sure its more expensive but it really works very well. If you want higher quality you can get a DAC and your own amp.
