I have borrowed a SVS PB 10ISD from my bro to work in tandem with my Velodyne CHT10 sub. The SVS PB10 is good!  ;D Damn! Think I want it to run 2 subs. :P

My idea is to have the

(a) SVS PB10 ISD creating the more deep bass extension, while

(b) Velodyne to ctreate the more dynamic punchy and tight feeling during gunfire, drums.

How do I go about calibrating them to perform the above? There only 1 AVR's x-over setup as it comes with only 1 preout for sub. Or use that x-over setting and the two subs will automatically have 2 different range of bass extensions due to 2 different brands/moedel blah blah etc? Am I right?

My idea is to get a Y-splitter (@ the AVR end) to link both subs to the AVR's preout for the sub.

What else do the brothers here think?

Thanks

I feel personally that feeding 2 distinctly different subwoofers with the same LFE out can give a mixed bag of outcome, as the result depends on the combination of the room and sub interaction, subwoofer settings and character of the individual subs.

The PB10 does not actually have a cross-over setting, so combining both the vel and the SVS might be a bit tricky. Not impossible, but tricky.

Use the Y-splitter and calibrate for the SVS first. Then add in the Vel to the calibration (this is coz the Vel has got more adjustments to give you more calilbration flexibility to splice in nicely with the PB10).

Hope my advise makes sense.

Hi Jag

Thanks for your advice. Understood your suggestions.

Which also mean to make my life easier, I should go with 2 Velodyne 10" subs or 2 similar SvS.

Does the deep extensions and the tight punchy feeling comes in with 2 similar subs? I gather that you are running 2 svs.

Thanks

Hi

I run a REL via the speaker outouts for music - its a 10" sealed box and for effects, I intend to run my forthcoming SVS PB12+ via the sub-out with a crossover at 80Hz (my intend speakers will be capable of running down to 40Hz) or use my Paradigm Ultracube 12 for movies.

Hope this is useful and doesn't confuse you.

BTW, join us for some shopping in late Jan bro!

Meaning

(1) REL connected to the AVR's preout for front for your music

(2) SVS connected to the sub preout for movies.

For (1), does that mean that when watching movies, your REL comes in at the frequency determined by your xovers input on top of those handle by the SVS?

A bit  ???

Actually the REL is connected to the SPeaker outputs (then to the sub using the equipped connectors - I assume your Velo has speaker level inputs)

The SVS / Paradigm uses the RCA out - sub from the amp to the sub low level input.

Let me clarify, RCA  to Speakers outputs (L and R) via connector, then to sub?

Will join u for window shopping but WILL NOT be buying new stuff. Nowadays, I'm into vintage (i.e old and mouldy) fullrange speakers. Trying to build one

Have to be careful here when u do that. Firstly, u will get uneven bass response since there is inconsistent overlapping. RELs are actually guilty of confusing the consumers with their "super low bass".

I usually dun recommend different sub setup unless he user is competent with frequency response measurements with mic and RTAs. If not, go with dual identical subs.

Actually I'm wondering if you use 2 subs, how to connect it to up in a 5.1 or 7.1 setup?  You would have to run the 2 subs parallel?

Also for subs, what's the difference between the SVS cyclinder and box?

Just to clarify Zam

I run the REL for music and the Paradigm for movies ;)

N'er the twain shall meet, but you can try :)

Pete,

Zam was asking in the context of running in a way that the "Twains" WILL meet.

Otherwise your comments will really confuse newbies big time. It would be a good idea to post replies that are relevant and useful to the original qn.

Zam thought that you were running ur REL and paradigm simultaneously.

Thank you for your feedback, Jag

I PMed Zam to get his thoughts on the matter when the thread was closed.

I am just offering a different setup option  :-X

Zam I think we understood each other, so in order not to confuse further, I will remove my suggestions, but if the 'plan b' option discussed works, please post it.

Thanks for all your inputs. No worries from me about different opinions. I'm just a newbie who is eager to absorb things as much as i can over a short period of time.

To Jag: I have listen to 2 similar subs and they work seamlessly. Understand your concerns abt bass being muddy and such. Hope to visit your place to listen and learn from u and your setup if possible.

Petetherock: Opinions are always welcome. That's why we are having a forum

Cheers.

agree with Jag here.  I have been running at least dual subs different ones at that for the longest time. U shld only attempt it if u got a way to measure the results. or u have lots of time on your hands to play different disc and listen to the results and tweak yet again.  Esp if you are attempting to use one sub for mid bass and the other for low bass. U really need someway to play with crossover slopes and freq as well as implement a subsonic filter (throw away the bass below a certain freq).

That's why I really only succeeded when I used the sms1. which allows you to tweak for all this. problem is that it is rather ex and only does it for 1 sub. a cheaper model would be the behringer dcx2496 at bout 500 for 2 subs.

Also my experience is that measurements can be wrong sometimes. A fantastic graph may sometimes sound like crap. that's why experimenting with phase can make the difference between good and great sound.  Lots of hardwork and time. 2 similar subs placed at opposite sides/location is much easier to tune and to get a better result. But if u are willing to invest some time........  ;-p
