"According to this article on Endgadget, the AACS DRM used in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray has been cracked. The program allows one to decrypt and dump the video for play on a users hard drive, or it can be burned to a blank HD-DVD and played on a stand-alone player. According to the accompanying video, a source release for the program will be made available in January. Time to get that $200 Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive?"

Wow... i thought this is not gonna happen cos i read somewhere that the encryption used in HD-DVD & BR is military-grade just to prevent cracking... :o

After countless hours of debugging and scouring memory, the folks at doom9 have finally been able to confirm that muslix64's hack does work.  They've figured out where the title and volume keys lie for HD DVD in WinDVD's HDDVD playback software.  Two users, Janvitos and LordSloth are primarily responisable for the breakthrough, which occured sometime today.  To find out how to find the keys for yourself, check the doom9 forums. So far, the keys for Serenity, King Kong, and 12 Monkeys have been posted.

What exactly this means for the movie industry remains to be seen.

In related news, HDDVD rips have already started to appear on Bit Torrent sites.

UPDATE: Volume keys have been found for every current HDDVD release.  They're located on the doom9 forums, but because of legality issues, we'll leave you to find them for yourself.  It shouldn't be too hard.

Is AACS is indeed cracked on the HD DVD, Studio will probably flock to Blu Ray with its additional BD+ protection.....probably not the best time to get the xbox add-on.

What man can create, another man can break. Even if BD+ become popular, the pirates can attack at the HDCP level. There are already boxes commercially available to strip HDCP from the HDMI transport.

Even HDCP implementation itself is flawed. If 40 player keys are compromised, the whole scheme falls apart. http://www.freedom-to-tinker.com/?p=1005

Methinks, they can only fight with lawyers. The consumer will be the one that is encumbered with nasty DRM and nasty letters from the lawyers if they attempt to circumvent the protections.

The pirates making the friendly copies will be the ones laughing all the way to the bank.
