mcmaranello Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 Paul Scholes scores the 2nd goal against Villa, perfect answer to big mouth Drogba. Perfect volley with timing, power, angle. What a scorcher :o My winning candidate for goal of the season so far :)
SiriuslyCold Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 bah every week someone comes up with "goal of the season" the way things are going, I would reserve judgment until the end of the season. Scholes' goal is certainly a candidate, as was Xabi Alonso's strike against Watford. For some reason, there have been many many awesome strikes
sonofdbn Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 sc, did you inadvertently leave out the "humbug" after your "bah" :)? Despite my support for Man U, I must say there was a Drogba goal a while back which was very impressive (can't remember which game): he teed the ball up with his back to the goal and then turned and volleyed it in. I agree - there seem to be a lot of outside the box scorchers this season.
SiriuslyCold Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 haha I'm the Grinch :P although I guess 'Pool's form should have me feeling charitable somewhat maybe we can use this thread to list candidates for a polll later in the season (how many options can the poll machine take? *LOL* ) there was one in the Che v Liv (later winner, as usual, back to goal twist and volley) and the one more recent you mentioned - but he's doing this with alarming regularity we can't call him a lucky b*st*rd anymore last week there was a Spurs player (Huddlestone?) who'll probably never score again ever. and yesterday if Carra's strike hadn't hit the keeper (who was duckling but held his hand up )... ;D
mcmaranello Posted December 24, 2006 Author Posted December 24, 2006 maybe we can use this thread to list candidates for a polll later in the season (how many options can the poll machine take? *LOL* ) ha ha that was my intention but I also thot of the poll limit... so why not put in your goal of the season for now like scorer, teams & goal no. so we'll not forget come end of season? What say u? Mine is easy (it's still fresh & hot ;D) - Paul Scholes, Villa vs Man United, 2nd goal
lewlian Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 Goal of the week/season etc is always open to debate. So called scorchers are at best well struck strikes and at worst rugby conversions. Then there are those nicely worked team goals with nice passes and movements that leave one salivating. Add to these the individual goals that demand a bit more skill than just a good strike. ;D

That's the kind of goal that'll still be in the mind of football fans long after he retires.
yellowhandman Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 cantona scored a very similar volley during his time with united. so far, i'd say scholes' scorcher last night is the goal of the season, because it was a first-time volley that required more than just power. but rooney's thump against newcastle a couple of seasons ago was even better, although i think that one had a fair amount of luck in it. whereas you know scholes could probably pull off that volley again and again in training.
SiriuslyCold Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 scholes scored only one other one like that, and even I remember that one (not the match or whatever else though) lewlian, a couple of Arsenal's goals last night against Rovers were like that I think... great buildup movement and individual skill worst goals were the ones RVH used to score... wait wait wait, tap in. (this is sure to get manyoo fans heated up heheh)
yellowhandman Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 scholes scored only one other one like that, and even I remember that one (not the match or whatever else though) You might be thinking of the one where giggs floated a corner directly to scholes on the edge of the box, and he volleyed it straight into goal. think it was also against west ham, actually.
SiriuslyCold Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 see, everyone remembers that one... ;)
sonofdbn Posted December 25, 2006 Posted December 25, 2006 IIRC, according to Paul Masefield (sp?) on TV - yes, perhaps not the most credible source - Scholes scored a similar goal against Bradford. Sorry, was paying more attention to Jamie Yeo... ;D
SiriuslyCold Posted December 25, 2006 Posted December 25, 2006 good work by ESPN/Star on that - you tend to gloss over how lame Mase is as a pundit. Reevsie is better but having both Jamies will confuse Jien ;D

mcmaranello Posted December 26, 2006 Author Posted December 26, 2006 They can't beat Paula's Greatest Hits ;D
yellowhandman Posted December 26, 2006 Posted December 26, 2006 how did this thread become about espnstar babes? oh, i see...goals...SCORING... wishful thinking.
rahul Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Mark this time. Henry just scored the goal of the season. Wat a sweeeet finish. Exquisite touch from Fabregas to set him up. Whole Blackburn defence left gaping !! Breathtaking !!!!!!!!!!
dbchoong Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Actually, what is the goal of the season? Is it a shot that went 200mph into the top corner from 40 yards out? Is it a series of fantastic passing, one touches between 6 attacking players and result in a goal? Is it a harmless looking shot that the keeper fumbled with but was the goal that won the league due to goal difference? There are so many great goals every week (is it something to do with the ball?).... some change the outcome of the game (eg. Newcastle's Martins goal against Spurs turned the game around) or some don't (eg. Henry's goal made it 2-0). So, which was better? ;D

Martin's goal would make the Geordie supporters jump up in joy because it lead to a victory for their team. 2. Henry's goal made every footy fan stand up and applaud the sheer brilliance of that strike and the preceding approach play. No wonder Blackburn supporters gave him standing ovation when he was subbed. For me a 2nd category goal deserves the award ;D
SiriuslyCold Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Freekick of the season, in a sense... Drogba nutmegs Ballack (how accurate is that...) ;D
mcmaranello Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 Freekick of the season, in a sense... *ROFL* ;D if that one from Risse didn't hit the crossbar, it could easily be THE Goal..
dbchoong Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 The fumbled Arsenal penalty Pires/Henry was pretty fun too. Can't find the video/animated gif, though.
