OK something wierd is happening

I downloaded a DTS CD it's 5.1 multichannel WAV encoded

when I play it -> receiver via optical (i.e receiver doing the decoding) I get L/C/R/Surround BACK/Sub (NO surround L/R)

when I play it -> receiver via analog multichannel I get normal 5.1ch output and everything sounds fine.

what can be happening? is there any way I can fix the WAV file if the channel marking is somehow screwed?

SC, if I understand you correctly, your problem occurs when you do: source -> optical out -> receiver. Whereas it's OK when you do source -> decoder -> analogue out -> receiver.

If this is correct, what are you using for decoder?

Or is there a possibility you're inadvertently doing some audio-processing at the source? For example, is it possible that you have a sound card/device which is taking the original file as, say, stereo, and then "expanding" it to a pseudo surround which is then re-encoded to this multichannel digital out?

Is it possible that you're not sending a DTS signal to your receiver and the receiver is processing the signal into some multichannel hybrid? Does your receiver show that it is in fact getting a DTS signal?

What is weird is that even if it's a mislabelled channel in the original DTS, why would something be marked as Surround Back when it's not one of the 6 channels in 5.1? Would Surround Back even be in the DTS spec?

sonofdbn thanks.

the source -> decoder is the internal DVD player decoders - feeds the amp thru the multich analog inputs. It is a 5.1 DTS cd, made by some music enthusiasts who can't wait for the record labels to release original multichannel versions of some favourite albums.

Anyhow... There is a ENHANCED SURROUND button on the receiver that matrixes the surround L/R audio into the single surround back (its a 6.1 system). This works fine normally (I get 6.1 audio from 5.1ch sources)

But with a few of the DTS cds it turns out the whole L/R surround gets folded into the surround back channel (and the surround L/R goes quiet)

I switched off the matrix processing and all is right with the world again.

desray... you need a reboot mate.

Hahaha...I dunno what the heck happened yesterday note...the forum just go nuts with me. Whenever I tried to do editing to my thread, this message just appears! :P

Anyway glad to know that you got it working. What I actually wanted to post is for you to go into the OSD of the Receiver/Amplifier and play with the Speaker settings A/B or A+B...There's nothing wrong with the DTS CD you have burnt. But all these no longer useful liaoz...coz you already find the answer to your woes. :)

Cheers!~
