tsammyc Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Finally got to hook the SXRD to the Xbox 360. Unfortunately, 1080p via VGA (which works with my Dell 24") isn't displayed properly on the SXRD. The image is stable, but only about 2/3rd of the screen is displayed. 1360x768 works fine, however 1080i via component appears to be the best option. I think that the progressive signals are not fully run through the Bravia processing, which enhances the picture, while the interlaced signals are. Oh, well.... a bit disappointed. Overall however, HD-DVD at 1080i is spectacular on the SXRD through the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player.
htfreak Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 It may be possible that your SXRD set is capable of performing an inverse telecine of a 1080i60 signal back to its original 1080p24 source. Any confirmation that this is happening on your set.
htfreak Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Checking out the manuals (resolution support page), configuration setting screen eg. Film mode vs Video mode, Info button are just some of the things that I would check.
tsammyc Posted December 4, 2006 Author Posted December 4, 2006 Doesn't say anything in the manual. However, there are many settings in the DRC (digitial reality creation), which might be close to what you want. Anyway, the set has DRC 2.5, which is the newer version of the processing. If you can find out whether DRC 2.5 does the inverse telecine and it does then the Singapore SXRD does it.
enthusiast1624705824 Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 how are the features of the xbox360 HD-DVD player as compared to the stanalone players? Is it as advanced as the latter?
audionoob1624705779 Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Is your xbox connected to xbox live? You need to download thier latest VGA patch for HD DVD....... http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/11/30/dashboard-update-aka-the-1080p-fix.aspx
tsammyc Posted December 6, 2006 Author Posted December 6, 2006 how are the features of the xbox360 HD-DVD player as compared to the stanalone players? Is it as advanced as the latter? There is only one standalone player available, the Toshiba, and the PQ is identical even though you are limited to component or VGA. The Xbox loads HD-DVDs much faster as well. Some avsforum members say that the Xbox audio isn't as good because it downgrades everything to Dolby Digital.

Its not that the Xbox doesn't output 1920x1080 via VGA, but it does it at a slightly different horizontal sync than the Sony TV expects so the image is cut off. Since the TV can't be fixed (it works fine with my laptop), I'm hoping Microsoft fix the Xbox via a patch eventually.

But is it possible for this xbox HD-DVD player to upscale to 1080p resolution through component output? I think the latest firmware has fixed most of the problems? ???
tsammyc Posted December 6, 2006 Author Posted December 6, 2006 The Xbox does output 1080p via component when you are playing games, but the moment you put in a HD-DVD, it switches to 1080i. On VGA, it does 1920x1080 for both games and HD-DVDs, so technically, it does 1080p on VGA for HD-DVDs. The latest Sony TVs (SXRD, X-Series) do not accept 1080p over component, only 1080i. They accept 1080p over HDMI and VGA (if available)

There will be a firmware update to support DTS 1.5Mbps encoding of the TrueHD and other lossless formats (to compensate for lack of HDMI audio and analog outputs).
htfreak Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Just saw the 70" SXRD at Sony Paragon earlier and immediately all thoughts of the Sharp 52" disappear liao. Only word to describe it is SHIOK!!! Immediately thought of ordering it at Ngee Ann BD tonight to get the 10% rebate which would reduce the set to 9k only. Unfortunately when I popped in to BD to enquire, they mentioned that Sony last minute chicken out and pulled out of the BD 10% rebate promo. WAH LAN!!#@&(*$@#@$%@#$% Damm you Sony.

Haha, if you count the PCs and laptops (I watch DVDs on them), I have 8 PCs with screens (6 LCDs, 2 CRTs), 3 CRT TVs, 1 LCD TV, 1 Projector and 1 SXRD so that makes 14 places where I can watch DVD ;D Only two 1080p capable with 1920x1080 native resolution ::) although one CRT can do 1080i. Was thinking of adding one to the car, but have not found a DVD with GPS that does time alignment, auto eq and controls and iPod well.

Are you getting the $799 table stand that Sony is selling. My only complaint against it is that it is not equipped with castor wheels.

At least I can enjoy 2.35.1 movies on a much bigger screen, the 48" stamp-sizes the image it's almost unwatchable
