I have 2 identical 8" subs lying around. I read in a recent issue of What hi-fi mag that sometimes 2 small subs can be better than 1 large one. I want to tried it out myselft. Anyone ever tried this?

Also, how do you connect 2 when there is only one sub pre-out in the the avr?

see this article

this article is about live applications, but the principle is the same

... when the distance to both sides is the same, sound from both sides arrives at the same time. But as we move closer to one side, and farther from the other, sound from one of the sides arrives before the other.

This time arrival difference produces comb-filter effects. Destructive interference occurs when two signals, one of which is delayed in time with respect to the other, are produced from two sources.

The problem is not nearly as significant at mid and high frequencies. First, because the troughs are narrower, and hence less audible, and second, because the zones created are smaller.

With bass frequencies, one can literally walk the different cancellation areas, whereas the high frequency zones may be so small that our left and right ears do not share zones. Thus the effects of cancellation are not as destructive.

not if you are connecting two active subs

if you connect two passive subs then you start looking @ whether they are in series, or in parallel and how the resulting impedance drops (in parallel, or increases if connected in series)

if the impedance drops, then your amp needs to come up with more power

in tis case, shd be ok... if setup already, must try Cars DVD (Dreamworks cartoon).. my stand alone sub was working overtime during the race scene..... can't imagine with 2 subs... macham a double barrel machine gun going off...... ;D

if not mistaken, tho its a cartoon... the sound is really from the respective car models...

Well, just got it set up. And finished watching James Bond Die Another Day. Wow! You could feel the reverberation from each explosion. Luckily the missus didnt explode as well...

I've placed both subs together in a corner of the room. I dont think I have any cancellation issues. Thanks for the tutorial though.

Now must get a copy of Cars to test it out as well...

Thanks for the input guys.

I have actually been wondering, would 2 subs be better than 1?

For instance, 2 x Paradigm PS1000 versus 1 x Paradigm PS1200? Or 2x SVS PB10NSD versus 1 x PB12NSD?

Considering no placement problem and the room is about 6m x 4m.

Please advise.

Cheers!

2 subs are better than 1.

But 2 significantly lesser subs will NOT be anywhere as good as 1 significantly superior sub.

I feel that 1 PS1200 will be better than 2 PS1000 coz 2xPS1000 does not go down to 20hz as good as 1xPS1000.

As for the SVS, I think its quite close, thou I would go with 2xPB10s since 2 offers more flexibility and the PB10s are pretty good on its own.

but if the subs are two different brand of subs, would it be better or worse? I've PB10 and SW150, thinking putting them together but no sure good or bad. any advise? thanks!
