hifiluv Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 Hello bro, just curious, so many different mini tube amps around.... how do you decide which one to buy ???? gut feeling or do you refer to some websites for reviews ? I'm a newbie to audio-tubes so hoping to learn...... :) actually i also newbie....so u can say a little bit of gut feel... just last yr, i first got into tube amp when i bought a 2nd hand Cayin MT12 (EL84s)... fm then on.... all my amps are tubes or like MP5, tube preamp at least. for the lastest buy from ebay... i was just trying it out and did not expect to win the bid. so far my tube experience is limited to EL84, EL34 n 6L6. I have briefly heard the 300B, but i found it too sweet for my liking. KT88s are big big sound but don't really suit my style at least for the moment. for some purchase, eg the MP5, i went to the net to read up before making a decision. the MP5 was very strongly reviewed so i took the plunge n with no regrets, for tis px, its simply one of the best sound todate for me. also for me hifi buying is 50/50, 50% looks and 50% px / featues. ;D just to share. :)
bolts1624705732 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 bro, you really kanna tube poison until very deep liow. ;D
ah_fu Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 so any comments on the different tube amps which u have owned? difference between ,EL84, EL34 n 6L6...., push pull AB or pure A amps.... mi oso itchy... going to jump in to the tube river ....... I have heard the 300B, vocal is very detailed.... not sure about the other type of tubes..
hifiluv Posted October 28, 2006 Author Posted October 28, 2006 bro, you really kanna tube poison until very deep liow. ;D i think so leh... for this kind of $, get sweet fluid sound..... what more can i ask for.. ;D so far my most impressionable combination- Cayin MT12 - NAD C542 - KEF Cresta II - Klotz GY107 / Neutrik - Canare 4S11 it sound like a million $ to me ..... ha ha.....
hifiluv Posted October 28, 2006 Author Posted October 28, 2006 so any comments on the different tube amps which u have owned? difference between ,EL84, EL34 n 6L6...., push pull AB or pure A amps.... mi oso itchy... going to jump in to the tube river ....... I have heard the 300B, vocal is very detailed.... not sure about the other type of tubes.. actually each tube has its own characteristics.... n todate if not mistaken all the amps i used is AB push pull... so far not try pure A yet. my lastest, 6L6 is a rather peculiar tube, need to warm up at least 1/2 hour before playing, before tat it sounds like a transistor radio, harsh n dry but when after the warm up, the full tube sound kicks in and the longer u listen to it, the sweeter the sound it becomes. for EL84 n EL34, they are more friendly and gives a full body sound just minutes into playing but again like for most tubes, the longer, the richer the sound. the 300Bs is an acquired taste IMHO, very suited for jazz type of music, which is not really for me at tis moment. so best to try them out and decide which suit yr type of music. the reason why i went for this ebay amp is becos its running 6P1, quite close to EL84 type of sound which i miss after selling off the Cayin. :)

ah_fu Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 btw, how heavy is the amp you have bid from ebay? got 25kg? looks like shipping cost covers about 70% of the total $$ paid.....
hifiluv Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 btw, how heavy is the amp you have bid from ebay? got 25kg? looks like shipping cost covers about 70% of the total $$ paid..... yes, u are right. also why i decide on a mini tube becos its only 9Kg. the bid px is 26GBP but shipping n insurance brings to a total 74GBP, 64% of costs goes to bringing it in. :)

hifiluv Posted November 3, 2006 Author Posted November 3, 2006 100% sea shipment. By air from hongkong, if include customs clearence; no more than 4 working days. yes, i think so, i hv also check, its registered parcel via sea shipment (given a tracking No.), but i think the 6-9 weeks is conservative, but w c lah... how soon can arrive. :)
hifiluv Posted November 3, 2006 Author Posted November 3, 2006 .. on a slow boat from China! ;D wah like tis one, probably on a junk, vely jialat one then, what happens if the wind change direction.. will i ever get the amp then ??? actually not really lah... got tracking info, parcel coming out fm HK ;D
ah_fu Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 just something to check..... the mains in china is mainly 220V but is 230V locally. even though in the ebay description, it is rated from 110V to 240V... i would think that the transformer will mostly likely be heated up more.... and may break down faster..... hmmm...... any opinions?
