Just wondering how many folks here are contemplating plonking down an relatively inexpensive US$199 to jump onto the HD-DVD bandwagon via the Xbox360 add-on player.  Bundled with a RF remote and a copy of the King Kong HD-DVD title limited to early purchasers, I guess my actual cost for the player would be more like US$175 after deducting the free movie.  An additional advantage would be the possibility of connecting it to a PC for use as a HD-DVD Rom drive, I guess the temptation is just too hard to resist.  However, the caveat is that you are limited to using analog output methods aka Component or VGA to your displays.

Anyway, I have been trying to order one from established online stores in the US like Gamestop but have been unsuccessful in doing so due to some arcane Microsoft policy that forbids them from exporting these players abroad.  Anyway, I finally managed to place an order for it via ValueElectronics (from which I obtained my HD-A1 player previously).  So I guess for those who are keen to import these in, you can do so now at their website.

hi

Can I check if the HD-DVD Xbox from US will work with local XBOX 360 consoles ?

Since XBOX 360 still does not have HDMI output, will it produce inferior quality compared to buying standalone HD-DVD player with hdmi ?

No idea if the US HD set will work with Japanese X360. But HD DVD is region free to day so no reason why it shouldn't. In any case, there will be a Japanese HD set (albeit w/o the King Kong movie, but the price is lower than the US set), which should work just fine with the local X360s.
