Hey guys was offered $14xx for the Chorus S 726. Very tempted with the Chorus Cobalt 826 but the price tag is $22xx. Definitely within my budget not sure if i should put the extra $$$ on the Cobalt 826. Thoughts?

Hmm just realise there is a newer model the 700V and the 800V.

Btw any JMlab owners care to share their experience with the above series?

Cheers!

Once you try the Cobalt I'm quite sure you won't go back to Chorus. I believe normal price for 826 was around 3.3k I think. And with the new model on the way, probably you can bargain a bit more though the current price is already quite attractive.

Guess U must have heard the sound of Cobalt speaker.

Would U care to share ...

Thinking of getting it too but was told by some the bass is thin.( is it true???)

Also what is the price range of the new series that U mentioned??

Yea the Cobalt was very clear and crisp in terms of music and movies. You are right about the bass it could do with a little bit more punch. The V series has not arrive yet so i didnt get to hear them.

The reviews mention that the V series has better bass then the S.

I think only the 800V series has bass improvement due to the down firing port.

Also IMO, would rather wait for the new V series.

Did dealer mention when the V series is coming in???

Nope didnt mention when. He was pushing the Chorous S and Cobalt and ask me when i can come down again to demo again. I might drop down again to see when the V series would come in.

Well in terms of looks/cosmetics the V series definitely look better especially the 800 V and i heard the price for the 800 V will cost slightly lesser than the Cobalt. Also the tweeter for the V series has change.

I kinda doublt that the new Chorus V will have better bass than the current series. Since you get a hint that the new 800V is slightly cheaper than the Cobalt, I would lean on the Cobalt especially with the current attractive price. Cobalt shares the same driver type as Electra or even Utopia albeit with different motor. The tweeter is also direct descendant of its higher series. On the other hand, Chorus employs completely different driver and tweeter, which is geared toward budget segment. Sure JMLab can tweak here and there to perform better but I believe some limitation is there. Note that the crossover point is raised from 2.2kHz to 3kHz. I assume that the resonance freq of the new tweeter is higher than the old one. Typically the better the tweeter has lower resonance freq. Well, that's my analysis anyway, it may be wrong.....  ;)

Hmm its seems that the newer series of the Utopia be and Electra be has change from tioxid 5 tweeter to the Beryllium tweeter.

However camparing the Tioxid 5 to the TNV its seems the Tioxid is still better.

The biggest draw to the Chorus 800 V will be its improvement to the  Bass and a slicker look.

My thought

Wait for the new 800 V series so that can  expand into multi channels or HT without hassle.

With current Cobalt, might have problem expanding due to discontinued model.

Better still, wait for the 800V arrival and do side by side comparison.

But if synthesis' assumption is right and speaker is use for stereo only, than grab it!!!

Hmm its seems that the newer series of the Utopia be and Electra be has change from tioxid 5 tweeter to the Beryllium tweeter.

Utopia Be has been around for almost 5 yrs already. The BE tweeter is the main selling point.  Electra had a 25 anni BE edition for 2 yrs also. Now they release the 1007/27 BE with a better look.  The tioxid tweeter is from the prev Utopia (i.e. >5yrs ago).

IMHO you should totally forget about Chorus line.  That's there simply for a market presence.  The main selling point of the Cobalt is its tweeter which is trickled down from the Electra line, which itself is from the prev Utopia line.  Unless the BE tweeter is being passed down, the tioxid tweeter is still the 2nd best in the JMLab family.  I've listened to Chrous, compared with the Electra I have (not the BE version) the diff is huge.  The chorus is simply harsh.  Never tried the Cobalt really but if it shares the same tweeter driver as in Electra that places it one whole level above the Chorus.

JMLab has always been renowned for its tweeter and mid range (and also very easy to drive). The xover is smooth and seamless.  And yes most agreed its bass is a bit weak, but that can be compensated by a gd sub. In any case which affordable spker gives you real gd bass ? The diff between relatively gd and perfect is just a little.

good bass is subjective. i think jmlab is more on clarity than weight.. some may call it lean, even on the mid-range.

i too am using the tioxid tweeter with an old jmlab (refurb), and enjoy it very much.

find the chorus lacking that sparkle whenever i go over to my friend's house to listen, but its quite a decent speaker also.

So what JMlab center and surround sperakerws would u pair with discontinued cobalt 826s?

I'm think of getting the 826s too (if I like what I hear) but main concern is above.

cobalt CC 800S should match quite well I'd think. I'm using that also.

surround not so important IMO. up to you what you want to get.

Well, I may eventually DIY my center and sell my CC800S but you may have to wait rather loooooong for my 2nd hand. It's very seldom you see 2nd hand JMLab unless it's rather old. The Profile center should match as well. You may also check with Jay Audio whether they carry Cobalt series or not. I don't know their contact though...
