maddog2020 Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Hi all, I fellow forumer did put up this question in one of the threads and I was also curious but unfortunately no one answered the question. Could anyone here please let me know if this is possible? Also I was told that most of these upscaler DVD players cannot display 720p upwards on a LCD TV via HDMI or Component. According to this guy from a shop it is all bullshit. Can anyone clarify? I currently have my Philips 32" LCD TV connected to my Pioneer 393 DVD Player via component cable and it only displays 480p. Can I enjoy 720pand upwards picture quality by connecting upscaler DVD players like Denon 1930 or Oppo 970 via HDMI directly to my LCD TV? Appreciate your feedback and would like to thank you in advance for your kind advice
deepakvali Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 you would be able to get at least 720 through hdmi to your tv. well my question to the public was can upscaling be done through component, which to me remains unclear. websites give no inputs either.

Understand upscaling thru component is not officially sanctioned....but fact on the ground by OEM manufacturers are different.... Besides soucre capable of upscaling thru component, the display device must be able to display 720P and 1080i. Not sure abt the model of LCD TV capability here.
luq_skywalker Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought upscaling can be done with any wires as long as it has capable 'bandwidth'. Component cables usually can accept up to 480p bandwidth while hdmi can do up to 1080p. Diverting abit (I got this info from a website) , hdmi/dvi allows other information to be sent along with the signal such as DIGITAL content protection, this will disable the picture (no picture) and use of a DVR to record. If you are not using a DVR the DVI will give you the 1080i signal even if the broadcast has the copyright protection, but you can't record in 1080i with future or current HD compatible recording products. If you have a component connection and the broadcast has the copyright protection in it, the component connection will display the copyrighted HD broadcast in 480p. That is the main difference. That is some digital information lacking in component. If you have the HD DVR always go component, at least you can watch and or record the copyrighted HD broadcast in 480p. Of course there is a difference is picture because they are different connections.
maddog2020 Posted October 14, 2006 Author Posted October 14, 2006 Thank you all for your input. So bottom line is component can't display more than 480 due t ocopyrights laws in the movie industry but can do so in HDMI.
