As the scene hots up with 2nd Gen HD-DVD players and 1st Gen Blu-Ray players from mfgs other than Samsung coming onto the scene.  Just wanted to find out how many XP members has already taken the plunge into HD and its seemingly endless buying of HD titles.  I know that I have already "Xia Hai" and doubt will ever be able to be redeemed from the Abyss of non-stop buying.  My Amazon Pre-orders looks never ending.  :o

Me not as agressive as you.  Only got 20 titles + 6 flying over now.  However, have another 10 on pre-order at the moment.  Can't believe we only got 7 owners here leh.

I have discs only does it count ?  :)

Honestly I'm waiting for the 220v XE1 ... :)  Btw I just realized it's much more difficult to order from Europe, for example Amazon.de/uk/fr etc do not deliver players outside EU.  >:(  And there is no vpost for europe.. Any one has lobang ?

btw2 I just read the A1 is actually multi region for DVD, as long as it's NTSC.  Is it true ? It can play R3 DVD also ? That's very unusual for a US player.

buzz: HD-DVD is very cheap.  catalogue item is typically only US$20 before any discount/coupon in amazon

SRY to intrude But how much more does a HD DVD title cost than a normal DVD ?

Most HD-DVD and Bluray titles that I order from Amazon cost about US$17.99 before shipping.  HD DVD Combo titles will cost a tad more at around US$25.  Thus, I would say that it costs no more than an additional US$2 to $4 over regular SD-DVD's from Amazon.

Is the Toshiba the only HD DVDP available at the moment?

If you are referring to the HD-DVD format, then there are offically two different brands out in the market namely Toshiba which has two models and RCA which has one (which is actually OEM'ed from Toshiba).  On the Blu-Ray side, there are also two models out now namely the infamous Samsung and the newly launched Panasonic.  In this 4th quarter, Toshiba will launch their second generation replacements for their two models while Sony and Pioneer should be launching their 1st Gen Blu-Ray players to the market as well.  At the same time, Microsoft will make their add-on HD-DVD player available for US$199 while the PS3 with its Blu-Ray drive will make its appearance as well.  Hope I have answered your question and not totally confused you instead.

Hi All,

Does HD-DVD refer to Hi Def or Hard-Disk...if it refers to Hi Def, could you'll be kind enough to let me know what players are you'll currently using...

Cheers

Maddog.. HD-DVD refers to one of the two High-Def disc format available in the market now.  Most of us are either using the Toshiba HD-A1 or the Toshiba HD-XA1 HD-DVD players.

No, it can play R1 DVD only.

Jeff,

Thank you for your response.

I guess the models you'll have are of the high-end which is beyond my budget.

As for me I looking at either Denon DVD-1930 or Oppo DV 970H or 971.

Any advice on these if u have any that is?

Actually the HD-A1 can be gotten for around US$399 now which translates into less than S$800 including shipping.  The 2nd Gen HD-A2 is avail for pre-order at $449 now from ValueElectronics.  This includes local US shipping + 2 free HD-DVD titles.

Nope but you can order from www.valueelectronics.com.  Better do it fast as VpostUSA will be upping their shipment rates quite a fair bit from Nov 1.

This player is not new and it is only a DVD player , cannot play HD/Bluray disc .

Yeah, just found out, checked the HD website.  I thought they added the modifications to play HD/BR, it only upconverts to 1080.

I'm here in the US now and they have a whole lot of titles, but the titles are split between the 2 formats.  This is going to be difficult to get both just to play certain discs, so I wonder who will be the first to develop a player to play both formats.

Why is it difficult, just take one player of each format, walk to the cashier, take out credit card and pay.  Very easy what.  ;D
