Darthfunk Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 Hi guys need some wise advise/opinions from you gurus here on speakers. I just got a new receiver a Yammy 2600 to replace my Onkyo 838. Currently iam still using my very old Klipsch KG 4.5 (front), KV-1 (centre) and KG 1.5 (surrounds) which is still serving me very well. Usage will be 60% HT and 40% music. Although i have no complains with my current speakers, would a budget of $2500 - $3000 be enough to get an even better set of speakers (Looking for clarity and tighter sound)? OR should i just get a good subwoofer (SVS) and be happy with what i have? Like a little kid with a new toy, Iam seeking to improve my current set up especially my speakers. Appreciate your kind reply. ;D Cheers!
richieleo Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 If you are not opposed to 2nd hand stuff, this is my suggestion:- Front and Center http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=41023.0 Rear:- http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=40866.0 Sub:- you choose. This set up is completely triangle (save for sub) and very good speakers too. I have almost the same setup as I also have the yammy you have. I use a Rel sub. The 5 speakers (less the sub) will put you back $1800 so you get can a very good sub and perhaps even upgrade you transport (if you haven't already). ;D
Darthfunk Posted September 22, 2006 Author Posted September 22, 2006 Thanks for the recommendation but if my budget allows i would prefer to get new sets. Maybe save up abit later for a SVS sub. Goner go read up on those brands of speakers. Cheers!
Darthfunk Posted September 25, 2006 Author Posted September 25, 2006 Any more recommendation guys? ;D Btw is my budget of $2.5-$3k be enough to get a good set excluding sub?
Guest OmegaRed Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 monitor audio RS series. KEF iQ series. jmlab chorus series. b&w 600 series.
richieleo Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 monitor audio RS series. KEF iQ series. jmlab chorus series. b&w 600 series. How about mission?
Darthfunk Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 Dont like them not my preference. Jmlab, Kef and B&W seems to be in the running for me but i'll spend more time auditioning more speakers before i make my decision.
Quest88 Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Nice choices. :) Can probably add Dynaudio to your audition list. Or how about M&K?
Darthfunk Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 boy looking for a receiver was the easy part but looking for that right speakers is tough man. not goner rush my self goner audition till my ears feels they are the right set. Will check out Dynaudio and M&K next week end. Need my holiday break ;D
Quest88 Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Well, to me, buying speakers is a real big thing as it contributes the most to the overall sound. For me, after hearing so many already, I just get lazy and stick to brands that I generally like, having gotten used to their particular house sound. Even if weak in some areas, also can forgive. haha For me, my preferences are largely JMLab, Usher, Dynaudio and B&W. Never really tried Kef. :)
petetherock Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Hi I had the Dynaudio Audience series and I tried driving them with a Marantz SR19 THX Select AV amp These speakers are pretty demanding and may be more than the Yammy can handle, a simpler load may be better, during heavy moments in music and movies the stress led to clipping, so just be careful. The b & ws are easier to drive but the mark up is unpleasant. I also had the KEF 30 and Reference Series, nice stuff and quite musical - they may be a good match and are easy to drive Do try them Good luck!
deepakvali Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 dynaudios are my cup of tea the moment but using yamaha to drive them will let them sound like cat squeaking, u definitely need external power source
Darthfunk Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 I guess dynaudio are out of my selection since it needs more juice and i dont intend to get a power amp at the moment. Gonno make my HT journey slow and steady dont wanna whack everything at one go its harmful to your pocket lol :P
SiriuslyCold Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 while you're at Asia Sound listening to the Labs maybe can listen to Paradigms as well My first receiver was a low end Yamaha with the Atoms sounded great
petetherock Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Hi May I suggest you narrow down to a few brands / sets then audition - there are too many and everyone has their pet brands/speakers. Stay above 6ohms, not too steely or bright speakers, and get the ones which suit your place - is it a small or large room, floor standers / bookshelves Most flats will be fine with bookshelf speakers and let the subwoofer do the hard work and thus make it easier for your amp to drive your speakers How about the MA RS series and an SVS sub - still within your budget Or the Epos ELS 3 series is a nice set up and their sub is well review too. Save some $$ for cables, wires, and room treatment, plus software!
Darthfunk Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 Actually have narrowed down to this 3 brands B&W, JmLab and Kef but iam not ruling out other brands that i will be auditioning. I will take the advise of slowly and carefully picking the right speakers and not rushing to get something i may not like. Even if i buy them i also dont get to enjoy them for the whole month of Nov will be in australia (Nation calls >:() Zzzzzz bummer ....... I will set aside another budget for the sub but goner be later. Wife already starting to question why i got so many new toys recently ears starting to hurt lol (wonder how iam goner explain about this speakers) :P Another thing Yamaha was very nice to get my 2600 (gonner be EOL) replace (some special arrangement with the dealer too) to a 2700 but have to wait till it arrives end Oct. Btw anybody staying on the east especially the east coast area?
kzone Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I have a B&W setup with a SVS PB10, my 5 speakers cost me slighlty over 3K, but I bought the front 3 used though (old matrix series) ... Its a very relax kind of sound, some may say slow.. quite different fm a JM Lab which sounds more lively to me.. I think u should get the sub as sooon as u'd be watching movies, its much more enjoyable with a sub... And if you are more into movies than stereo audio, do consider spending more on the centre rather than the front 2 cos this is where most of the sound fm the movies will come fm. Most say 60% but I think its closer to 70% P
Darthfunk Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 Talking about sub which svs sub model is small but earth shaking enough for a small 4 room HDB hall I can hide from my wife :-X :-X Btw can the sub be place at the corner behind (good camo area) the front speakers 8)?
kzone Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Why not the SVSPB+/2. its not very small, but can easily be camoflouged as a coffee table.. lay a nice table cloth on it & I'm sure ur wife will be appreciative ;)
Darthfunk Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 Actually i was thinking of the cylinders sub (not sure about their performance) easier to hit behind corners with the speakers blocking :P The 20-39 & 25-31 PC-Plus looks nice and small. Recommended ?

Jason Yeo Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 hmm how tall are they 1m? You can refer to their site http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-pcpow.cfm . The size they listed are quite accurate to physical size . Btw , cylinder is not shipping internationally any more . Unless Moonsoon is special and can get the cylinder subs ::)
SiriuslyCold Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 hmm how tall are they 1m? er, they will fit right in if you have a ballistic missile farm in your living room
