byang Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 What u r considering now is an excellent choice if this is the budget u r looking at. I just got one recently and am quite pleased with it so far. If you want to know more, just pm me. I can share with you from a user perspective.
Darthfunk Posted September 12, 2006 Author Posted September 12, 2006 Yup Budget wise around $300 cause goner do another upgrade next year to HD-dvd or BR-dvd player when more are available. So mean time just goner get a decent DVD player to enjoy HDMI.
deepakvali Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 brudders out there, is it worthwhile to up the stakes somewhat from his S$300 odd budget to get the Denon 1920 over the Pioneer 490's, Toshiba, etc ? like to hear from brudders ;D
pschia Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 OPPO is the absolute best value for money under $300. For that price, you get a universal player that supports SACD even through the HDMI output and is critically accliamed as a really good CD player, even better than many more expensive standalone CD players. Its firmware is user-upgradeable and it comes with a HDMI cable saving you another $50. There's one feature that I really like about the OPPO and that is the playback of 4:3 aspect ratio dvds at upconverted resolutions. The OPPO is able to detect that the aspect ratio of the dvd is 4:3 and plays back at 4:3 ratio even at 720p/1080i resolution whereas other upconverted dvd players tend to play back at 16:9 making viewing of such dvds very unnatural.
maxngck Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 pioneer 490 pq is good. currently using it. connecting using normal hdmi. already very satisfy wif the PQ. think later will get a better hdmi cable. any1 using daiyo hdmi? is the quality good? those branded cable like monster cost so much. cant affort. sori for hijacking the thread :-[

Pretty decent.
SiriuslyCold Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 call me stereotype but i do not feel comfortable with such brands like OPPO ;D then you can buy the Cambridge Audio DV89 - uses the same motherboard as the Oppo (at $500 MSRP)
Darthfunk Posted September 14, 2006 Author Posted September 14, 2006 Btw is the Oppo 971 available in sg also? Wanna see the diff betwen the 2 players heard the 971H has the better scaler/deinterlacer than the 970HD.
petetherock Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 Hi The 971 is an internet purchase. Branded companies do this sort of thing, slap on a logo and charge more. Audioalcoholics has an article comparing 3 AV pre-powers which look identical inside and the fascia is very similar. The manufacturers didn't asnwer why there was more than 1k in price difference, so go figure... Given your budget and that you don't live in USA, an Oppo is fine, but I have a few pioneer dvd players and they have never broken down on me, though I cannot comment on how good their performance is compared to the Oppo.
