liverpudian Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Bought a Samsung LCD TV & switched to Starhub digital set-top sometime in May (all for the sake of World Cup but alas not selected for HD trial) :'(. Noticed that for certain programs the picture seems pixilated/grainy. Is this due to the TV, program source or something else? Any suggestions on how to improve the pic quality? I’m currently using the Starhub coaxial cable to connect the wall outlet to set-top & normal composite cables from set-top to tv. Also is there any diff btw a digital coaxial cable & video cables? Asking becos while looking for a coaxial cable, the salesperson recommended a “silver reference” cable instead (abt $60 for 1.5m). Figure it might be some kind of video/component cable becos he also mentioned can be use for component connection if I buy 3 cables. A little confused since digital coaxial cable is for audio & the other seems to be for video, right? Can some kind soul enlighten me as I do not wish to be conned into buying something that is not meant for my purpose.
lchang Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Hey Brother, look for the thread " Cable for HT" S$65/ for the whole package. The monster package even comes with component cables that I am also using for connecting me Starhub box to my TV, pretty good. Cheers!!!
liverpudian Posted September 4, 2006 Author Posted September 4, 2006 Always thot component cable only meant for component connection (as the name sugguest) You mean can also use for composite (yellow, red, white) connections? Sorry I quite "mountain tortise" in this area. Won't it be an overwill? More impt will this improve the pic quality? How abt the RF coaxial cable? Will changing that helps. If yes, what brand/model? Any advice on the digital coaxial cable for digital audio out. Does what the salesperson recommend make sense or is he out to make a quick buck? Can a video cable be used for digital audio connection?

Your problem is most likely due to the big display you have (>30"?) and 16:9 screen. The starhub signal is still coming thru RF cable (video/audio mixed) from the wall antena. Changing cable might help but limited. (starhub signal => garbage in, garbage out). if really want to spend the money, go to LHS and ask Robert to make you a video cable using Belden 1694a and terminate with Canare crimp RCA connectors. The belden is $3/m and the connector $7/ea Hey Brother, look for the thread " Cable for HT" S$65/ for the whole package. Can a video cable be used for digital audio connection? Component cable usually can be used for video/stereo (yellow+red+white). But not vice-versa, as video will need bigger bandwidth for signal transfer. Can also use Belden 1694a for digital out cable, or ask Robert to recommend you one. Do a search in this forum for "belden" or "canare", and you might find something useful.
