fresh Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Hi All, I'm thinking of buying of the Panny XR55 or 57. Presently i'm using Pioneer HTIB. Do you think its possible to use the Panny AVR to power my current HTIB speakers and continue using the present Pioneer to play the DVDs? Can these be combined together? Even if i need to change to new cables, i'll do so. With all the current Panny hype, thought i'll jump in the bandwagon ;D All comments greatly appreciated...
SiriuslyCold Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 does the pioneer have a digital (coax/toslink) output? if yes, then can. although the Pio HTIB speakers are wasted on the XR55 it will work until you upgrade them
armoury Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Speakers are speakers so they should work, although when you first use it be careful to see if there are impedence problems, or if your AVR is simply too powerful for the speakers. But the real problem will be the "DVD player", and the subwoofer. HTiB systems usually aren't very flexible with alternative outputs (apart from their own "system cable), so even if you want to use it as a DVD player only, is there a digital audio out with which to connect to the AVR? The next problem is the subwoofer, which is usually connected to the HTiB by a "system cable" and therefore can't be used as a standalone sub. Of course, if it does have an RCA line-in then you can indeed connect it to the AVR and use it like a standalone sub (remember that almost all AVRs do not power subs, the sub must have its own amp, i.e. be an active sub).

SiriuslyCold Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 actually I did this starting out - HTiB and gradual upgrading by replacement of component parts. fortunately my htib unit had a optical out so i could use an external receiver before I found a pair fo speakers I liked and replaced the HTiB front speakers.

varun1624705824 Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 IMHO, Fresh is likely to see better results by changing the speakers instead of the amp. Start with the fronts, then the centre, then the sub, then the rear, and finally the amp and dvd player. A better amp driving crap speakers is unlikely to result in a noticeable improvement (a "change", perhaps, yes, but an "improvement", nah, unlikely). - V.
