kzone Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 I'm used to seeing power amps / heavier equipments being placed on the lower shelf and the CDP / lighter eq on the higher shelf. But when surfing thru the sound mechanics website, came across the quote below... Quoted fm http://www.sound-mechanics.com/en/product_hifi_tx.htm TX1(1) The lower height causes least disturbances to image controls. As a practice, power amplifier and heavy equipments are placed on top of the rack Personally have not tried playing around with the position of eq... but I thought placing the heavier eq on the bottom shelf will make it more sturdy & stable... hence, have a more positive effect sonically... Have I been wrong all these while?

And easier to change tubes + better ventilation. I can't imagine the big bulky solid state pow amp placed high. Just my views. ;)
Relax Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Sorry to hijack But since you are on the subject of Eqpt rack... Is there a problem putting bookshelf speaker on hifi rack? Do u need to spike the bookshelf spkr? Wanted to buy a pr of bookshelf spkr for audio only but only place is top shelf on my rack.

Actually it isn't wrong to place the spks together on the rack if space is limited for you. But it is a must to spike the spks so that the vibrations are not transmitted to the hardwares. When placed separately, the sound already causing the hardware to vibrate, so you can imagine how much more impact it can cause when sharing in the same rack. :)
DIRTRUN Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Hiya, I thought all amps(except digital ones) need maximum ventilation for cooling purposes so doesn't it make sense to put it on the topmost shelf, aesthetic reasons aside of course? Cheerio Dirtrun
kzone Posted August 21, 2006 Author Posted August 21, 2006 Quite true... but most audio racks are design with the bigger "compartment" on the lower shelf... maybe the benefit of having the heavier eq below to make the whole structure more sturdy by lowering the centre of gravity outweighs the benefit of better ventilation for the amp?
ohlins Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 the higher the rack....the less rigid it is......i wun use anything with more than 3 shelves.....3 is max....i like 2 shelves...... :)
kzone Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 the higher the rack....the less rigid it is......i wun use anything with more than 3 shelves.....3 is max....i like 2 shelves...... :) unless u only have 1 CDP & an integreted amp, u'll need to get more than 1 rack.. that will cost much more than a 3 or 4 tier rack.. btw, what shelf u using?
domj Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 If ur amp is a biggie, diff to put it at the top shelf, like ohlins said, CG unstable. Need longer spker cables too ;D

Wah, olive oil sia. Thats an interesting tweak. Maybe I should go get some wood and soak in whiskey for a while, since there's quite alot of good comments about the Pioneer spkrs at ISSE. ;D
