Pingu1624705792 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 After a year of contemplation, finally bought a universal player, the Oppo 970 to experience multi-channel music. Now I have a problem - I can't find SACDs or DVD Audios anywhere! Most CD shops sales girls have not even heard of these. And this includes 2 Sembawang Music outlets! The only disc I have is an SACD of Toto IV, bought from the 'never before sale' at Beach Road. It sounds great, but I need more... I believe I have seen some SACDs at New Disc Village. Anywhere else? I must get something for this weekend. Appreciate any info. Thanks
Guest wcseow Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Hi Gramophone have quite a few selection. I bought 2 recently from them. I have seen a number too in Sembawang music branch in Eastpoint (the tag has SACD written on it). Though I could not find any in other branches. I presume their main outlet in Sembawang should have wider selection thanks After a year of contemplation, finally bought a universal player, the Oppo 970 to experience multi-channel music. Guest wcseow Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 hi was reminded that Sembawang audiophile outlet is in Northpoint.....
SiriuslyCold Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 keep an eye on the small print for SACD - some (a lot) are stereo only there's a relatively big selection of SACD/DVD-A at Gramophone OUB (raffles place MRT) and Capitol
armoury Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 SC's already pointed you to the biggest source of MC music locally. But please note that sadly, the whole SACD/DVD-A product is dying out, with limited new releases, if any, even from SACD's inventor Sony. If MC music, rather than hi-res, is the important element to youm, keep an eye out for DualDiscs, which are CD on one side and DVD on the other, with the DVD side usually containing a DD (dunno if they have DTS?) MC mix of the music. It's not hi res, but it's still MC. SACD/DVD-A have always been a rather niche product, with only audiophiles really interested, hence most "ordinary" CD shop salesgirls don't even know what it is. Gramophone of course is exceptional in that their staff know their stuff -- I remember asking for Diana Krall's last release on SACD when the CD version came out, they knew immediately what I was talking about, could tell me the SACD wasn't in yet, next visit it was available at Capitol but not OUB (I was working in RP at the time so was quite a regular visitor), and offered to have it brought over and call me when it came in. Great service! ;D

I tried Gramophone at OUB. The SACD collection was pointed out to me. But its just mixed with the CDs in the classical section... I didn't really spot all that many. I was told that DVD A was at the 'back' but I didn't see any. But I do remember seeing these at their Capitol outlet. I hope to head there tomorrow. As for these formats dying out, its not all that surprising is it? Poor publicity, poor collection, poor availability... Still, the Oppo is really great with CDs and DVD V!
Guest wcseow Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Have not been to the Audiophile in Northpoint...do they have a larger collection of Muitlchannel SACDs there then Gramophone?

armoury Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 So in your opinion which is better in terms of sound? SACD/DVD-A or Dual-disc? Dual-disc is not always hi-res audio, sometimes it is only plain old Dolby Digital or DTS. So with those tracks, no fight. SACD v. DVD-A? No idea. There are only a few releases that have come out on both SACD and DVD-A, e.g. Diana Krall (Look Of Love, I think), and maybe Marvin Gaye, but I am not so die-hard as to get both versions. Without both, you can't really compare, e.g. how to compare Dark Side Of The Moon SACD against A Night At The Opera DVD-A? I just take the view both sound great, buy whatever titles interest you without caring too much about whether the hi-res release is on SACD or DVD-A. SC: the DVD-A section at Gramophone OUB is actually behind the DVD shelves carrying the R3 titles. It's the same row as music/concert DVDs, when facing the music DVDs, DVD-As are at the very right, bottom shelf; you would then have all the Chinese/Cantopop CDs/VCDs behind you on the wall. Hope that helps.

Worse than the Toto IV. Will check out DVD-A at OUB Gramophone tomorrow.
Guest wcseow Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Hi I bought Manhattan Transfer and Roxy Avalon and pretty happy with it. My missus, who normally thinks music as loud or soft only, were pretty impressed with the sound and sits through Roxy with me alone in the living room throughout....(nice feeling :)) A couple of nights later, my eldest daughter join us.....(lamp-post) Anyway out of curiosity, what do u feed your Oppo to?...for me it is Yammy2600 but I play it on my Pioneer DVD/Pioneer receiver in my MBR too. :) Thanks. As for the music, must say I was disappointed. Worse than the Toto IV. Will check out DVD-A at OUB Gramophone tomorrow. Actually there are two versions of the Toto IV sacd. The first release was among the earliest SACDs ever marketed to trumpet the arrival of the technology. It wasn't even a hybrid disc, which is a selling point of sacd: http://www.highfidelityreview.com/reviews/review.asp?reviewnumber=568504 The much later release is a hybrid disc and apparently it also sounds better. ::)

SiriuslyCold Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 It seems there's a new spate of DVD-A releases mostly CD+DVD-Audio so we might get lucky.
jayou Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Hi, Sorry to dig up an old thread. I am new to MC music but got addicted after hearing the bootleg DSOTM. Are the shops in the thread still good on their selections? Or is it worth getting from an on-line shop at a reasonable cost please? Many thanks.
SiriuslyCold Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 not a good time to be jumping on the bandwagon... some of the better discs are OOP and could be expensive. there's still a selection at a couple of Gramophone outlets and DVD-A even, at Capitol. other than that, its very slim pickings. Even online OOP discs are bound to be expensive (e.g the ELP Brain Salad Surgery DVD-A is US$122 on the other hand, some older discs can be found cheap on Amazon check out the DVD-A registry in my signature and also http://www.sa-cd.net/ (you can play SACDs can't you?) and check out Quadraphonic Quad for news and reviews of surround discs. you can PM me if you want to check out some surround DVD-A/SACD especially Porcupine Tree stuff
jayou Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Thanks SC for your reply. Just send you a pm ;)
tbln Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 New Disc Village at Adelphi has quite a reasonable range of multi channel sacds. Well recorded or otherwise. ;D
