BENITEZ PIPS NEWCASTLE IN BATTLE FOR HOLLAND STRIKER

At last Liverpool end summer scramble to land £10M Dirk

by David Maddock

DUTCH striker Dirk Kuyt has agreed to join Liverpool in a £10million deal.

The Anfield club thrashed out a payment schedule with his club Feyenoord last night and should complete the transfer before Saturday's Premiership opening day clash with Sheffield United.

Kuyt has been in talks with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez and despite an offer of nearly £90,000-a-week(*) wages from Newcastle, has agreed a switch to Merseyside for half that figure.

The Holland star was given permission to talk to Liverpool earlier in the week, as Feyenoord finally accepted that they simply couldn't keep him.

Liverpool have offered their £2million-rated Dutch defender Jan Kromkamp plus £8m in exchange for Kuyt, but Feyenoord were holding out yesterday for a straight cash deal.

But it would be acceptable to Benitez if he can offload Kromkamp, striker Florent Sinama Pongolle and various reserve team players before the start of the season.

The Liverpool boss has already sold Djimi Traore to Charlton for £2m and has shipped out several players on loan, including keepers Scot Carson and Chris Kirkland.

Kromkamp was in Holland at the weekend talking to both Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, and he could move to the latter for £1.5m.

Benitez is also confident he will manage to ship out Pongolle and his French under-21 international team - mate Anthony Le Tallec.

Pongolle has been targeted by former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier, who is now at Lyon. He has made the striker he first brought to Anfield as a 17-year-old his number one target this summer. Benitez will let the Frenchman go for around £2m, and he is also prepared to let Le Tallec go on a season-long loan to Sochaux, where former Portsmouth boss Alain Perrin is in charge.

That will free up the wages for Kuyt and also put almost £6m into the coffers to allow Benitez to make a serious downpayment on the striker who has taken Ruud van Nistelrooy's place in the Dutch team.

Feynoord want cash up front and last night were close to a deal which will see Liverpool put £5m down and then pay the rest over the course of three years, as Kuyt agrees a five-year Anfield contract that will net him £10m.

(*) Holy cr*p are Newcastle that rich? sheesh

Magpies are rich by virtue of strong fanbase in the north. As the only big club they draw the fans lock stock and barrel whereas most clubs fight for fan base within their cities. E.g. London, Manchester, Liverpool etc.

for a moment, I was wondering who is Dirk David Maddock!

£90,000-a-week works out to be around £5M a year BEFORE match bonuses!!  WOW!!  Then again, they are paying Owen abt the same, if not more, for sitting around! ;D

Though Im a Reds fan myself, the issue of Magpies' deep pockets intrigues me.

They have spent so much last year on worthless buys, namely & chiefly, Luque, Emre, Owen (now injured!), Jenas (now at Spurs), bumbling Boumsong, Scott Parker....lately,Duff. Now wanted to steal Kuyt from under Liverpool's nose.

Its no surprise that with all its mismatch players, Newcastle has won nothing & as usual, I dont see them as a threat.

Spurs, on the other hand, has more shrewd buys in Zokora (8.5mil) & Berbatov. They already got Dawson, Defoe & Lennon in their books & these youngsters will set the EPL on fire. Whatever happened to Mido?

Owen should be on abt £110K-£120/week. He's well on his way to be the new Alan Shearer ala ruptured ACL & winning zilch with Newcastle.

Yeay ... finally, another world class striker to join liverpool ! so can we assume he's only earning 45K a week ? wow , that's relatively cheap .. I think even Gerard's pay is 100K a week.

To compare it to Gerrard is a bit of a stretch, before we get a chance to see what Kuyt is made of.

So far, much of what has ben said has been based on reputation. Yes, he kept RVN out of the Dutch squad the the WC, but he did nothing to impress me for the moments that he did play....

I hope he lives up to the hype...guess that means that one other striker will be let go....and I am guessing that God will be the one.....

He's resume in the Dutch league is good but remains to be seen. Actually we are lucky that he did not perform well in the WC2006 as the price would have soared beyond budget. I never put faith in these performances, just need to look at the Senegelese ones bought. Heck, i rather they only perform at club level and don't make it to the national team. Hehe...

A lot of clubs going for him so I dun think he is that bad as in WC2006. I agreed with Lewlian point of view that he played not so well in the WC else his prices soared like hell.... Hopefully, he will be as good as those managers believed him to be...

IN RAFA I TRUST....  8)

Depending on which website you visit Liverpool is paying £9 to £10M for Dirk K.

Considering that Britain's Bitterest aka Everton paid £8.5M for Andy Johnson, a Coca-Cola Championship striker who was not even close to a WC slot, who couldn't save Crystal Palace from relegation nor score enough to send them back up the Premiership, I think Dirk is a comparatively worthwhile investment.

At the start of last season, Birmingham made major investments in players including £6+M for Emile Heskey & ended up going down. Hopefully this season, our Blue neighbour makes similar 'progress' :)

Newcastle's take ...

"Toon won't buy a KuytAug 17 2006

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Newcastle United have moved aside and left the way clear for Liverpool to sign Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt for £11m.

A United delegation of chairman Freddy Shepherd and manager Glenn Roeder watched the 26-year-old striker come on for the second half at Dublin's Lansdowne Road, as Holland crushed the Republic of Ireland 4-0.

And there was talk coming out of Ireland late last night that Kuyt was coming back on United's private plane - and some television stations planned to be at Newcastle airport when it landed just before midnight.

But this was never going to be the case, as United only rate Kuyt in the £5m bracket and, unlike Liverpool, were not prepared to pay e15m for the Dutch striker."

Hilarious  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Did Newcastle also stepped aside to 'allow' MU to sign Wayne Rooney ;D

Actually from what Feyenoord says, the Toons were never in it..

"We did everything we could to keep Dirk at Feyenoord," said chairman Jorien van den Herik

"We went a long way to do that and Dirk was open to that, but we knew that the chance was he would leave if his dream club came in. Liverpool was, and is his dream club.

"Many clubs have tried to contract Dirk over the recent period, but he's said 'no' to clubs every time because they were not appealing enough, despite there being some very renowned clubs among them.

"That characterises Dirk's attitude: either Feyenoord or my dream club."

Price of British players are insanely inflated. Very few English players are really worth the amount of money that is being paid. That's why many managers have said that they are forced to look to the continent for players...

I think it is excessive, yes. For a player that has a couple of caps, and is relatively unproven, I would have thought 5 mill would have been fairer.

Anyone remember how much ol Rushie was bought for? We're talking about someone who has probably the best strike rate of Liverpool players old and new included.

Factor in inflation (and I am no expert on how to do so), I don't think it would be close to what our great rivals paid for Johnson

"great rivals" indeed.  ;D

that's the premium on home-based players in England. you wouldn't believe Carrick is really worth that price tag one year ago would you? fact is someone of Alonso's calibre came to Pool for 10mio pounds 2yrs back and it is no wonder continental coaches are loathe to pay over the top for British players as personified by what Wenger and Ranieri did to field almost a foreign team in the EPL at one stage or another.

You're an Everton supporter ain't u ? "great rivals" my foot. "Britain's Bitterest" is who they are.

Dirk Kuyt top 10 goals. Awesome.

despite poor performance in the world Cup (who did well?) if he brings his club form to Liverpool... Man U's shirts will tell the story of this season ;)

you're right!  AWESOME!

Excellent 1st touch!

Minof MP3, in case you forgot from some of the other Liverpool-related posts, I have posted before that I have been a Reds fan for the past 24 years (as of this year).

While I do not admit that is the longest any one here has been a Reds fan, all of us would know that Everton are not our, in your words, "Bitterest" rivals. Anyone will tell you that Man U are the "Bitterest" rivals, not only for us, but for many supporters of other teams as well.

Surely you cannot deny that the Everton team of the 80's with Neville Southall, Kevin Ratcliff, Gary Lineker were the best at that time, and the fact that they, and not Man U, beat Liverpool at that time was 'fine' with me, cos at least it was another team from Liverpool, though they are not considered good enough by ol' Shanks (those who are familiar with his quotes will know what I mean)....

If u say u are a Liverpool fan, that's good enough for me  ;D

To clarify, I did not say Everton is our most Bitterest rival but that they are Britain's Bitterest. Here' what you can try - go to any LFC forum (eg Koptalk, forum.liverpoolway.co.uk, /www.redandwhitekop.com/forum) & ask who are the Bitters.

Want to know how the Bitters became the Bitters, read this hilarious account ...

http://forum.liverpoolway.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=40

BTW it's not 'fine' with me when LFC loses - even if it's to a team of Pele, Cyruff, Maradona, Platini, ZZ, Beckanbauer etc much less to a team managed by an alcoholic that is Howard Kendall. As a LFC fan, you would know this quote by the late great Bill Shankly ...

“This city has two great teams - Liverpool and Liverpool reserves.”
