Guest wcseow Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Hi, I need help and avise After renovating my place and putting in new TVs, AVs, DVD player and SCV...my mum now is totally confused on how to watch TV in my living room. Here is my problem 1. All the stuff are in inidvidual cabinets (great design in my view at that time). So my mum must remember to open the cabinet door for the AV, SCV box or dvd player when she want to watch. She cannot remember that 2. Need to set power on AV, set the right input, power on TV, set the right input. Though I use HDMI, she sometimes in her haste press other numbers which will set the TV into tuner input. So she got to use 2-3 remotes and need to remember which remotes control which one. I try using stickers. Did not work. I setup the AV receiver to have macros. Did not help as the Yammy macrois activated by a toggle switch. She forgot to switch it back. And pressing it again will off the TV!. Sometimes she forgot to open the cabinet door. So I guess I need a Mum-friendly universal remote (Harmomy 885, 895?) and some IR/RF convertors/transmitters......? Any advise...what to buy and where to buy? Thanks P.S Devices I have in the living room Yammy 2600 Toshiba 47wl66 Oppo DVD SCV box Similar problem with her bedroom set but less equipment Karoke AV receiver Karaoka DVD recorder player CRT TV
Quest88 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Ok, this sounds troublesome for you really. Individual cabinets? So you have to buy multiple wireless receivers for each box? Ouch. The logitech 890/895 is RF while the 880 isn't. Price is alot of difference too if I'm not wrong, with the 890 being US$399 or so? http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/detailsharmony/US/EN,CRID=2084,CONTENTID=10930 For that price I think you have quite afew other options, Pronto 960 being one of them. If not, is it possible to have one RF repeater, then the rest all IR repeaters? I'm not sure where to buy those stuff in Singapore though. Here's an interesting product for you to look at: http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/WirelessRFRemoteControlExtender.php
Guest wcseow Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Thanks Was trying to find out whether logitech sells the receiver separately. I assume I need one for each device....but seems could not locate it at any of the stores. The NGH product looks good and they have a 3-eye thing as well!. It says it work with Harmony so I assume it will work with 885. Mmm...looks like have to order it online Ok, this sounds troublesome for you really. Individual cabinets? Quest88 Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Yes, you probably need one receiver/repeater for each device if they are in separate cabinets. That's the price to pay for such design. haha So far the only other remote I know of that is cheaper is the Kameleon 10-in-1 that comes with RF. http://www.oneforallkameleon.com/kameleon.htm Not sure but I think I saw it at Millennium at Funan. For hard buttons with RF, think Monsoon stocks some URC remotes.
teoh1624705809 Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 I am using Sony RM-AV3000 Remote Commander, available in most SLS shops. I think there is a newer model now - AV3100? Programmable one button to turn on/off/switch multiple devices. The only complain is this 'remote' is big and priced around $2xx.

Tyer Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 I think the 1 button to off multiple device can be done with many remote controller via macros.
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Why not make things simpler by direct connections. Examples: from SCV box direct to TV, from DVDP direct to TV. That way your mum won't be so confused. I don't think your mum will be particular about picture quality or surround effect. I'm sure TV has multiple inputs and DVDP has multiple outputs that can be utilised. You still can maintain your current connection. My mother in law never got confused... ;D
Quest88 Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Guess synthesis's suggestion removes one step, and that is selection of audio input to the receiver. However, it still don't solve his problem of his mum having to open the cabinets and having to use separate remote(s) from the tv if she is using dvdp or other device.
Guest wcseow Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Gee..many thanks for all the suggestion..my mum will be grateful :) Shopping time again in the weekends I guess. I am glad that there are solutions... :)
Guest wcseow Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Thanks...er...pardon me but where is Monsoon? Yes, you probably need one receiver/repeater for each device if they are in separate cabinets. Guest wcseow Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Hi Looking thru the kameleon manual/web looks like it has everything I need in one packaged. Really hope Millennium would sell it. Will go down and take a look. Was looking at us online stores and looks like none carry it, only the UK online stores has it. thanks Yes, you probably need one receiver/repeater for each device if they are in separate cabinets. Quest88 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Monsoon is at Paragon shopping centre 2nd floor. Millennium is at Funan 2nd floor. You're right about the UK stores stocking the new kameleons only. I'm not sure why also. The new kameleons don't look better in person, that's all I'll say.. the metal finish somehow look abit cheap to me. So best if you can check it out for yourself before buying.
Guest wcseow Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Hi According to the website they have a Singapore distirbutor, Pantrade Electrical. Hopefully they can tell me when I can see that kameleon
mathew1624705826 Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Hi According to the website they have a Singapore distirbutor, Pantrade Electrical. Hopefully they can tell me when I can see that kameleon do you know how much is the 8206 Kameleon?
Guest wcseow Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 do you know how much is the 8206 Kameleon? I am going down to Millenium and hopefully it is there. Probably called up Pantrade too late, nobody picked up
Guest wcseow Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 HI I managed to dig out one set of wireless audio/video extender that supports remote extender as well. Basically it IR/RF transmitter/recevier. I thought will set it up and test it. It works for Yammy2600, Oppo 970. But it does not work with the SCV digital cable box...Why?
Quest88 Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 think the scv digital box has some problems with some IR remotes even. search on the forums. recall someone giving an explanation.
SiriuslyCold Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 the digital cable box IR is on some wierd frequency - or something like that; that was why it wouldn't / doesn't work with the Sony VL700
Guest wcseow Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Ya, did a search and saw some notes I hope the kameleon10inone works with SCV..
SiriuslyCold Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 my old Kameleon 8 (9960) works with SCV but there was too few memory spaces to store all the codes
Guest wcseow Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Hi Went down to Funan and visit Millennium. According to the person, kameloen 10 does not work with SCV cable box. Anyway it cost 410 and required to be indented. The "consultant" is not in so spoke to him over the phone. Pleasant guy, he ask me to give my my config and will probably will work something more economical.. so see how
Guest wcseow Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Hi Millenium propose the use of PowerMid extender and choice of Philips RU960 and Harmony 525 for the remote controller. They mention both works for cableTV and Yammy....mmm quite keen on RU960 any comment?
Quest88 Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 960 is quite ok if u like touchscreen remotes. just hope you get the same offer price that was going on at the last hifi show. :)
