Hi all,

Newbie here. Can the XR55 drive the Dynaudio 52 effectively ??? I understand that the Dynaudio are at 4 ohm impedance.

My other options would be the Quad11L and B&W601. Went to audit at KEC and thought the Quads to be more open, detail and revealing. They were paired up with the Denon 2106 avr.

Will buy the XR55 and still in considering which speakers to buy.

I'm looking at 50% HT and 50% music setup. Any comments are much appreciated. :D

I've tried panny XR55 to drive Martin Logan Aeon-i, which has a even lower impedence than the dynaudio.

You need to get a big and good transformer from SLT.

Posted

Hey bigtree thnks for your fast response ;D

Which speakers among the 3 are most suited for my requirements and how much would the transformer cost?

Didn't have the chance to audit the Dyns, only the quads and b&w...

What kind of cables/interconnects should i use?

Why still buy XR 55, shld go for XR 57. The difference is only US$70. It has better features like HDMI input, wireless surround etc

series I think if U are going to use dynaudio 52 I think U will do more justice to the speaker with a more pwr amp. You will be able to drive but not able to bring out the best. My 2 cents.

I'm using the XR55 to drive my Dyn 52s. In stereo and bi-amp mode, it sounds good enuf for me. Even in 6.1 mode powering the 52s and others, the XR55 hardly gets warm. I believe the XR55 can power 4 ohm speakers, but whether it powers it "effectively" I don't know, cos I'm no audiophile.  ;D

ok thnks for all the comments ;)

What do u guys think of the Quad11?

Still do not know which speakers to get, i like the Quads but i know nuts about the Dyns cos no chance to audit them....musically i 'think' the Dyns will outperform the Quads but in terms of HT ???

i'm jus a wannabe audiophile :D

Hi bro

As HT the audience is fine, but use the bigger centre not the 42C.

The caveat is power, lots of it.

I used the audience series in a system with a SR 19 Marantz, which gave 110 W PC in a THX select system (90mFarad capacitors, 70mVA transformer) and it was not enough. I bought the THX Ultra SR 18 EX (140 w PC) and that was fine.

I added a 200w PC rotel and it sounded under a better grip. The 52 is power hungry, but rewards you with excellant sound esp the bass. It will go down to 32Hz.

I did try my HK AVR 25 MK II (90w PC) - there was sound, but it was weedy.

Sorry but the budget would be tipped too far if you use a cheaper amp like the Panasonic. Its not the spces - its the actual power produced. Too many people buy a basic amp with ratings of 100 or more watts which only produces closer to 30W pc when all channels are driven.

As for the Quad 11, I would say the minimum is a 28XX Denon, Yam 2XXX or something like that.

However, its your $$ so if you have bought the Panasonic, you can always bring it to try at the shops with the speakers of your desire.

How about the KEFs or MA RS series, they are much more sensitive and easier to drive although I would give them better amplification still.

Good luck!

Hi

I agree with pete... Actually for home theater, I think u should look for sensetive speaker easy to drive type.. and put in a powerful sub. U can also look at Mirage and Energy. My opinion is that it is cheaper to separate your HT and hifi. They are not a similar type of sound.

ForHT to sound nice U look for speaker with clear mid and easy to drive. U want the speech clear and HT has many transisent sound soft to loud quickly and sunddely. In hifi depending on ur taste many like something like warm, good bass but probably to 40HZ only kind of thing.  Another good example for music you will go for monopoles  for all 5 channel but in HT I find dipoles sound best for rears.

If U want to mix hifi and HT, U could but to bring them to be of the same quality U need to spend a lot. Dynaudio is good but to drive it you need power and especially so U need transisent power...

I am using Energy for HT and Dynaudio Contour for hifi.

Here's a clipping of some test results from German magazine stereoplay

(click here for full PDF document)

And although the XR70 is an older model it's basically the same technology (Equibit) and power section, you can check out Sound&Vision Magazine's review and  lab results as well.

just so that if you have bought the XR55, all is not lost :)

Thanks Sirius

I have no experience with the Panny myself, but I have tried a few basic amps, and some mid-hi models and some higher end models and there is some difference.

I stand by my statement that we need proper pairing, scrimping on the amp to get better speakers is not advisable.

But...

If our bro likes his Panny, thats most important.

Personally I wont use anything cheaper than a THX select price range amp - 38XX Denon, Yam 2XXX etc on the Dynaudio

I tried a cheap <$1000 all in one Shinco with 80w PC to try on my speakers, sure there was sound, but will you get the best from your beautiful Dynaudios?

My 2c worth.

Musicality can be quite subjective and it depends on what's your music preference. If you listen mostly to vocals, the Quads might not be 'outperformed' by the Dyns Audience. But if you like good bass and have enough juice to drive, take the Dyns. Best is audition the speakers before you decide. Trust your own ears.

Off topic abit here. btw, Dyn users.  I thought the Dyns paired well with Plinius at the ISSE. you guys think so?

Yep yep, let the buyer decide what is good enough.

I read the Panny review on S & V:

"The Panasonic SA-XR70 provided good results on the test bench. Power output of 77.4 watts in surround mode (and 87.8 watts in stereo) was modest by boat-anchor standards, but a veritable gale-force wind from such a small receiver. (Although it met the manufacturer’s 6-ohm power spec in my tests, it didn’t perform

to spec into 4 ohms and shouldn’t be used with low-impedance speakers.)"

Dynaudios are 4 ohms, so I suggest an amp which is happy with such a load.

The Plinus is an excellant amp, but our bro is prob looking at something a 6th or less in price.... if the Panny is being talked about

Few people are willing to spend that much it seems for good amplification but I agree with you on this.

If you can spend a bit more, the Dynaudios will reward you to no end, better than the Quads IMHO.

Pete,

Just thought of asking some comments on plinius since quite a few Dyn users here  ;D

Not suggesting to the threadstarter to try that la hehe.  I'm not prepared to spend that much on amplification for the moment as well, for the plinius easily can buy quite a few of my hypex ucd180 amp.

Void, sorry for the offtopic discussion.  ;D

Hey thnks for all the comments...

As of now, i certainly wouldn't consider the Plinius due to its price.

I think i would go with the Quads paired up with the XR55. The Dyns i'm looking at are 2ndhand and i would have to source around for the center speaker.

Actually i like clarity with good bass...hmmm everything also want. Maybe if i buy a capable sub to pair with the Quads i can have good clarity and bass?

One last question, can anyone tell me how long it normally takes for Amazon to deliver the goods to my doorstep. The XR55 are spring clip types?

Thnks once again for all your time and comments....

nope, XR55 are binding posts.

well i prefer dynaudio sound to quad but thats just personal preference.

integrating a sub is not an easy task for stereo. good luck.

Hey bro

How much are you spending to import the Panny

Why not get a local warranty product, eg Yam, Marantz or Denon etc

Spend the rest on some nice speakers?

a well set up HT eg a 1k amp plus the infinty primus or Mission M3 series can be pretty awesome too

Then spend the rest of your budget on discs to enjoy.

Cheers

IMHO, get a good balance of your budget on speakers, amp and maybe less on the source.

XR55 costs only about S$450 total I think. I can't exactly remember.

If he has no need of the features of those $1k AVRs like video switching or ypao then I suggest the XR55 still. If got slightly larger budget and still don't need the features, I would advise spending on power conditioning. This still gives more money for the speakers.. going for M3 or primus is economical but will not sound better IMO.

pete if you haven't heard the XR55 I suggest you give it a try.

i too 2nd that, if its possible, run 2 separate systems, u would not regret it.  the sound for HT is very dff from music, thus calling for totally different components.  however, u may want to use the front to double up for music as well, which some are doing. with patience u can get very good components to build nice systems without burning a hole...if u dont mind 2nd hand.... IMHO

fyi, Zenn Audio has a Dynaudio 52 asking $600, can chk it out, www.zenn.com.sg

I really believe what you say about the Panny. I wont try and dispute its qualities.

At $450 it sounds like a great deal, let me know if you are gettin one, maybe I should try it as a bedroom set. Did my homework before and I wont spend more than 4k on my amp or speakers each, I was happy with what I had and the rest I put into movies.I audition a few amps before and was glad that I could not hear a lot of difference beyond the 4k range.

My point was that a well set up system with decent amps / speakers will bring plenty of joy, and I am sure many are happy with the Panny and have no desire to go further.

I have read forums too where people have fought over whether a cheap amp sounds as good as a high end one, often with those buying the mass market ones furiously defending their purchases, lets avoid this here..

In fact I might just get a Panny, use it with a M3 set up in a seperate HT whilst planning my bigger project.

Thanks for the review links.

Hey Bro hifiluv,

Thnks for pointing out the Dyns from ZennAudio, infact i went down to look at it on Saturday but didn't ask for it to be audit...

Bro Petetherock,

Well, i'm prepared to pay about 1.5K for speakers + center, about $500 on amp/avr, $150 on pair of stands....hmmm left only $150 on this month budget. Probably will wait till next month for 500-1k sub ohh and the Oppo universal player. Anyway the reason i'm buying the XR55 is the raving reviews i read almost everywhere and its price of cos....i was a former forum lurker ;D

Bro SiriuslyCold,

Are you using the XR55 from Amazon? If so, how long does it takes for shipping? And any advice on the speaker cables/interconnects i should use? Where to get them and cost...
