bolts1624705732 Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I went today. The most expensive system on display must be the one by Swedish Statement. It sounded great. PRAT was there. It had everything going for it. Fast, bags of details, atmosphere, transparency...Except it sounded bright....Not run-in yet?? In fact, this story of not running-in seems to be the main story. I can't explain why those Coltrane speakers, plus some other high-end speakers sounded bright. They shouldn't sound like that. There was 1 system that sounded the most impressive. The Wilson Audio Watt Puppies 8 driven by a pair of Goldmund monos. The midrange was full-bodied, tight bass and a slightly warm higher freq. Go listen to it. The other one that impressed a lot of people was a pair of super small size Pure Malt speakers from Pioneer. These tiny speakers are so small that they looked like mico-mini's speakers. Yet, they had spell-binding bass and ultra smooth midrange. A lot of guys were flabbergasted by it. A few of us were shaking our heads in disbelief. Ohh,...Did I mention their cabinets are made from discarded Whiskey oak barrels that are around 100 years old...giving them a very rigid cabinet...Cost $1099 plus GST. You must go listen to it to see(hear) them for yourself. There are digital amps on demo as well, Bel Canto, CI Audio and Nuforce.
benzx Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Bro, I was there this afternoon as well. I think I'm more impressed by the projectors than the stereo setups ;D The projector prices nowadays are damn tempting. ;D Back home for a couple of hours, and I'm impressed by the free LPCD :P
bolts1624705732 Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 I'm listening to it on my mini-compo now.... ;D Waiting for my amp 2 come back.

Running-in aside, the CDP is probably not very well matched to the rest of the system. When I first heard it when I first went to the show, it sounded bright, harsh and totally unbearable. Even the cheap Marantz/Mordaunt-Short setup in the Marantz room sounded better tonally. I went back to the Statement room to have a 2nd listen. It was playing the last track of last year's LPCD Demo. Still has that bright/harsh tone. My friend got them to play LPs instead and it sounded way better. Regards CK
evo171 Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Yes I must say those Malt Speakers from Pioneer were superb for its size... very warm sound...
benzx Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 My friend got them to play LPs instead and it sounded way better. Regards CK It better be. Cos I think that turntable and accessories cost more than Wilson Watt Puppy 8. ;D

I think I'm more impressed by the projectors than the stereo setups ;D The projector prices nowadays are damn tempting. ;D Back home for a couple of hours, and I'm impressed by the free LPCD :P Yeah the LPCD was impressive .. love the first track ! did anybody know that it's sung by a Singaporean ??? superb voice man ... should go and listen and be proud of this Singaporean .. :D
enthusiast1624705824 Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 what is LPCD? are the tracks in PCM sound or sth like that?
HT102 Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Any comments abt the Sonus Faber concerto domus ? I saw it but didn't get a chance to listen to it.
bolts1624705732 Posted August 12, 2006 Author Posted August 12, 2006 what is LPCD? are the tracks in PCM sound or sth like that? Some new recording method cooked up by Hugo Productions. Suppose to marry the benefits of LP with CD. They have a album with the same recording on 2 different CDs. 1 in normal CD format and 1 in LPCD. It's to allow you to do A/B comparision. I think cost around $68. You can get it at the show level 4 - Hugo room.
SiriuslyCold Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 what is LPCD? are the tracks in PCM sound or sth like that? all CDs are in PCM sound (except DTS-CD, SACD)
liuhao Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 things i like are: - audioaero sacd player. tremble so smooth and midrange body so full - linn system, and the linn LP12. clarity and details. layers of details... - shanling 300 cd player. so tuby and emotional - burmaster system. fast bass and dynamic. the mini-refrig like amp got power! - and the mointosh speaker array...impressive...
dream88sg Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 I was impress with 4 setup in the show -linn system I think I was most impress -living voice setup but I think the price was most impressive as well -Cairn and Dynaudio -B&W801 setup
Quest88 Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 magico mini impressed me the most. price tag also impressed me the most.
ricky101 Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Nothing impresses me this year... the free CD, no where compared to last year's. Felt sleepy by the 3rd track and start skipping forward. Good to see projector prices falling drastically and 1080p giving us a clue of what's to come in terms of HD video. I'm not sure about HD audio though. As far as I know, none of the av processor is yet able to handle the new HD format from Dolby and DTS.
SiriuslyCold Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 gosh, wasn't that 47Labs + Totem pair absolutely gorgeous. just... perfect.
hifiluv Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 gosh, wasn't that 47Labs + Totem pair absolutely gorgeous. just... perfect. yep, i stayed there 20 minutes just mesmerise by them... ha ha... all in all, its a very good show for me, for $10, u can listen to all types of systems, each room i would try to sit down and be there for at least 3-4 tracks before moving off. about the LPCD, first listen, not so impressive but then 2nd and 3rd listen.. hey it gets better leh... clear crisp vocals, solid separation, nice bounce.... ;D
pcking1624705747 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Think I saw dbchoong yesterday (Sun) at round 3pm with his wife ? ;D
media2368 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Agree that Magico sound nice as well as its price. Pioneer Malt Speaker sound and build may not be better than Magico but for the price, the Malt speaker is definitely a good buy. The Nuforce speaker also has a pretty good sound. :)
benzx Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 gosh, wasn't that 47Labs + Totem pair absolutely gorgeous. just... perfect. I love the CDP design. How much does it costs huh?
zapp1624705742 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Magico sound nice. Pioneer Malt Speaker sound and build may not be better than Magico but for the price, the Malt speaker is definitely a good buy. The Nuforce speaker also has a pretty good sound. :) I heard the malt speakers...was like WOW so small but bass response quite solid. They were using all the Pioneer flagship components? 989 + their AV amp
hifiluv Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I love the CDP design. How much does it costs huh? http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/47lab/shigaraki.html based on tis review, the 3 components, CD Tpt 4716, DAC 4715, Int Amp 4717, cheap cheap lah.....only USD 4750..... ;D
Quest88 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 magico magico. ;D about the LPCD, first listen, not so impressive but then 2nd and 3rd listen.. hey it gets better leh... clear crisp vocals, solid separation, nice bounce.... ;D found it not too bad also, with quite good vocals. but one thing i don't really like is that can hear static from the recording in some tracks.. guess its cos of the conversion.
