DIRTRUN Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Hey bro, Mighty nice 'new' mouse pad you have there... Cheerio Dirtrun
Jag Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 I just installed my woofers. So far, I have not stressed them the way I normally do, but its working good so far. But there is one issue I'm a bit concerned with the new drivers : the foam surrounds. I normally steer away from drivers that use foam surrounds because our hot and humid climate always cause them to disintegrate rather quickly. This new driver seems to use rubberised foam. I do hope it does not disintegrate in a short time like those foam surrounds.
Jason Yeo Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Guys , let me know your impression with the new drivers after run in few days . I did not install mine so do not know what is the impact .
armoury Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Hopefully SVS have taken into account that there are parts of the US that are pretty humid too, e.g. Florida, Louisiana, maybe Hawaii. As a backup, I guess we have to retain the old drivers as well, not that I was planning to dump mine anyway...
oliverlim Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 So impression of the new 12.3 drivers? :p I thought most of you would have installed it and tested it out last weekend! Oliver
Jag Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I installed in and tried it out liao, but its just thru my ears. I wouldn't be able to do a more objective test on the new vs old, but there are other forums that have done those tests and comparisons in greater detail than I could ever do. But just from the hearing part, the new driver will sound louder than the old ones if everything else was the same. But from preliminary tests, it does seem to be less distorted, but I have yet to really quantify those yet. Either way, those with the PC+ or the PB+ subs oleady have a winner on their hands. (Not to mention the Cylinder PC+ guys will be grinning from ear to ear knowing they have a rarer winner. :P)
media2368 Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 After changing the new driver, do you have to re-measure the Freq Resp and adjust your BFD again? Or just re-calibrate the SPL level will do? ??? I link the images below from AVS Forum http://images.andale.com/f2/124/103/8970570/1154723020958_12.2_12.jpg By looking the above measurement, can I say that, if we leave the sub at the same position after changing the driver, the Freq Respond is more/less the same, so re-measure the SPL level will do... Beside furnishing and headroom, what else is the different between 12.2 and 12.3? Sorry...I am just curious to ask, hope not offended to anyone. :)
armoury Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Thinking from first principles, the driver size (and shape?) is the same, the enclosure is the same, placement (if you put it back exactly) is the same, crossover is the same, so theoretically FR should be same, right? Just that the new driver is more efficient and puts out more SPL for the same input, so as your graphs shows, everything just moves up a little? Although in practice, I suppose the electricals in the driver would not behave exactly the same across the entire range (but just slightly "up").
Jag Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 I didn't really hope to have "improved" freq response for this new driver. I believe its the increased efficiency, better linearity, lower distortion levels at high SPs, power dissipation, lower harmonic distortion is what sets this 12.3 apart from the older 12.2. All these to the layman means, u can go lower and deeper with lesser chance of bottoming out. A 2dB increased headroom per driver can mean alot to a dual sub user.
desray Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Guess I have been this thread all these while...Jag, I am using the SVS 25 - 39 PC Plus Driver...do you recommend I change to this latest 12.3 driver? I missed the MO as well... :P

I have always heard about the supposely superior "sound" and "feel" of the ultras. Maybe I will get to see if that is true this friday when my twins are here. :p Cant sleep .... friday friday.... media2368 Posted August 28, 2006 Posted August 28, 2006 I have installed the 12.3 driver. It increased another 2db for headroom. Nice! I have not fully run/burn in, so I have no comments about the sound. :)
Jason Yeo Posted December 22, 2006 Posted December 22, 2006 Latest observation on 12.3 drivers . It FAILS on Flight of the pheonix test when playing at reference(note:my type of reference) .... :P Tested at oliverlim and one of friends house , result is the same . Although it is cleaner than 12.2 drivers , when it reach its limit, the drivers seems hit bottom and sounds LOUD . While 12.2 cannot go as clean , play at reference still ok . Other bassy scenes on other movies is ok(cleaner than 12.2) but not Flight of the Pheonix crash plane scene while the plane is turning , beware ...... A bit disappointed :-\
koma Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 hehe i hav tried it out too bro jason :P absolutely svs killer scene Latest observation on 12.3 drivers . Jason Yeo Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 hehe i hav tried it out too bro jason :P absolutely svs killer scene Yup . Just dun understand on my type of reference , it can pass war of the worlds, finding nemo , and etc scenes but not the Flight of the pheonix while plane is turning . Need to reduce 28hz around 10db from my type of reference then ok . 12.2plus driver is ok , though, although has slight distortion . Maybe this particular scene is really that hot from reference ??? But do enjoy your collections, bro ;D Coz it has no problem on other movies and cleaner than 12.2 drivers .
oliverlim Posted December 26, 2006 Posted December 26, 2006 I did email Tom about a month ago and he says this scene is the absolute hottest he has seen. WOTW or what not cannot beat it. This is what he says. "Flight of the Phoenix actually has louder bass than WoTW. In fact, Phoenix has some of the loudest bass we’ve ever measured in the 20-35hz range." And in addition to the low bass, it also has lots of upper bass in the 40-60hz region. I also believe they tune the 12.3 to do a little better in the upper bass as many have commented the lack of mid bass punch from SVS. As a result, it reaches its limit faster. So now this scene I use to see if I am going to have issue with my SVS at the volume I listen to or after tuning. It passes this, the rest is safe and I can leave my hands off the volume of my remote! :p I never had a 12.2 driver so cant comment on the sound over 12.3. Some people has commented then other then it bottoming out easier, it does actually sound better esp in music. I believe SVS has probably done what it can to improve the plus drivers. My guess the next plus driver will also be 13" like their soon to be released Ultra 13. Oliver
