Waiting for your Philips DVDR9K review  ;D

By the time this product is launched, we will probably be moving on to HD Recorders instead.  ;D

Phil, do you mean to say that Samsung provided you with the review player without any BluRay discs.  Tsk Tsk.  Surprisingly, Toshiba did not do the same for you guys.

Well.. the DVDR9K does come with a DVB-T tuner and 5.1 recording capability.

Just one BD demo disc with some movie clips.

However, this recorder is only able to decode MPEG-2 and not MPEG-4 signals.  Hence, it will not be useful for our local High-Def sources.  Correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption.

If got time, I would gladly take my Toashiba and my 2 Blu-Ray to your place for a shoot out....  what you say??  :)

I got free supply of cokes in my office.. pop corns err..

BTW, I remember you have a 1080p VW100 right? I have a 1024 x 1080 Hitachi plasma and a 1366 x 768 Samsung in my Lab now. No 1080p-ready display. Don't think Toshiba is going to loan me their 1920 x 1080 to evaluate a Blu-ray machine.

Then the better solution is to smuggle the Samsung to Audio's house lah.  I will bring the other step-down required for the Samsung.  We can then do a shoot out of our own and you can document the results and still submit it to your editor.  That is provided Audio is okay with us invading his home.  ;D  To complete the whole thing, I can also bring the Starhub HD set-top and Mediacorp HD set-top if it reaches me in time to do a mega HD DEMO SHOOTOUT.  :P

Jeff Ong,

No need to bring anything...I got a few banks of 115VAC outlets laid out along the workbench....no issue.

Bottom line is....BRING YOURSELF!!!  :)

Happened to chance upon the Samsung Bluray player over at Gain City in Marina Square.  They had it hooked up to a Samsung 32R51 using HDMI cable.  After spending 5 minutes watching the Bluray demo disc, I was like lost for words.  It looked no better than regular DVD output and was far from being able to compete with HD-DVD.  Even the split screen comparison segment between Blu-Ray and DVD was a farce.  The DVD half of it looked more like VCD quality.  Most of the Bluray clips shown like 50 First Dates was not sharp and had macro blocking showing up in the scenes.  Granted that this may not be indicative of the actual Bluray movie discs that have been released but I would say that any regular consumer looking at it for the first time may wonder what the fuss it all about.  :o

It's not configured properly lar or the Samsung is.... ops!! Not suppose to say that!

I finally got e BD-P1K up and running last Thurs, hooked up to a Hitach 42PD8900TA. Though the latter is not full 1080i-ready, the PQ is clean and sharp. As good as the HD-XA1 HD-DVD movie demo I saw during their Regza LCD TV launch.

As for the shootout. Err.. give me a bit more time. My boss said no to lug the Samsung out of e Lab BUT I'm more interested in checking out e 1080p performance. The closest I saw is in Computex and a Pana launch, but it will be cool to check out e PQ on a Ruby.
