luq_skywalker Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Hi bros, Kinda thinking of changing my front speakers, currently having a pair of floor standing Monitor Audio 3 because ( this might sound silly but bear with me) .. it doesn't match my living room colour scheme!!! Even though you think it's a total waste of money, I'm sure some of you out there have come across this scenario. ??? The thing is I still love my MA's, even though it's sonically uneven, but it's still capable of fine results if used in a sympathetic system, which is what I have in my Onkyo amps. A silly thought then came to my mind .. change the colour of the speakers ::) So anyone of you out there who has the adventurous spirit in you who has done and verified the outcome of the change recently ? Please help suggest what I should do w/o having to sell it, I am also quite worried that any modification of the surface would result in acoustic degredation. Anyone please :-\
Transworld Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 You might want to post this thread at echoloft, that side more diyers. Good luck.
synthesis1624705793 Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 If you are adventurous enough you can apply layer of real wood veneer and stain it to your liking or leave it as it is. But if the speaker corners are rounded maybe yoo need to think twice to apply veneer, not so easy. BEFORE AFTER
luq_skywalker Posted June 28, 2006 Author Posted June 28, 2006 Wow synthesis ... congrats! looks like a pro job ... almost like the monitor audio S3 bleech : did you suffer any acoustic degradation .. any difference before and after .. :-\ Just got inspired to do something else .. what about pasting over those tinting films that like those used for tinting windows.. I just wanna make it look darker to kill the rosewood shade ... you guys think ? ???
Guest Visillus Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I do think that wooden veneer look better... N not very ex if i remember correctly.
lewlian Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I used to have beech wood co-ordinated furniture together with my Mission 782s. Now that i've relocated and the new place comes furnished with dark wood stuff, i'm just gonna go get some colour co-ordinated nice fabric covers sewn and put them over my front speakers.
synthesis1624705793 Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 Hi Luq_ I changed because I was not happy with staining, not even enough (read: not experience enough with staining). So I pasted mapple wood veneer and just laquer it. Much better now. I don't notice any sound degradation from this change; it should not be any different.
luq_skywalker Posted June 29, 2006 Author Posted June 29, 2006 sysnthesis, the problem for re-laminating my monitor audio's is the fact that it has delicate baffle-edge radiusing corners. Speaker Experts, Need your advice and 2 cents .. My speaker works very well near to a wall because it's a sealed box (rather than a reflex-ported) design. The sealed box may lack the sensitivity and power handling of the ported system, but it does offer improved phase linearity and ultimate extension. So will putting a layer of stain varnish or taping film affect the acoustics? please , please .. need your expert advice .. :'(
