Heng Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 mean orcahrd area got 3 gramophone stores.... how to make money for the company? they should open some stores in west and north side Haha, I agree & all 3 stores are quite close-by!! That's because they are closing their branch at the basement of Scotts Shopping Centre. Moving Out Sale starts tomorrow at Scotts ! I thought Scotts basement is a new store??
pschia Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Haha, I agree & all 3 stores are quite close-by!! I thought Scotts basement is a new store?? Yes, it was. Probably meant to be a temporary arrangement until theTaka outlet is completed. In any case, Scotts would be torn down soon for redevelopment.
Protocol1624705808 Posted June 25, 2006 Author Posted June 25, 2006 That's because they are closing their branch at the basement of Scotts Shopping Centre. Moving Out Sale starts tomorrow at Scotts ! Nothing special abt the moving out sales, more like a warehouse sale cos the selection is limited ... and there's no more DVDs over there ... Heard they'll only move out towards the end of the year ... ::)
kopiman Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Haha, I agree & all 3 stores are quite close-by!! Gramophone Paragon is on the left side of Orchard road, while Gramophone Taka is on the right side of Orchard road.....it is just Puuuurrrrrfect. :-*
armoury Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Well, if you think about it, McDonalds, Burger King and Starbucks all have several outlets in the Orchard stretch, all seemingly fairly close to each other.
batdance Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Well you look at Northpoint, Sembawang Music and Audiophile is on the same level and opposite each other.
pschia Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Competing with other companies is normal business but competing with one's own self is cannibalistic.
Corona11 Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Competing with other companies is normal business but competing with one's own self is cannibalistic. Not really, as long as every store does turn in a profit, it is called domination. That way you could build a presence and set high barrier to entry for anyone who may wish to enter the market. See Sim Lim Square, actually dominated by several large groups, only the biggest and fittest survive and small boys cannot suceed trying to enter.
pschia Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 Dominating Orchard Road is very expensive and eats into the profit margin deeply due to the high rentals there. As it is even before the opening of the Taka branch, the Scotts branch has been very quiet usually. The Paragon branch is also not much better off. With the opening of the Taka branch, the traffic at Paragon's branch would be even worse. That's cannibalism. I don't think the Gramophone would renew the Paragon lease once it expires. On the other hand, the competitors like Laser Flair, Music Junction, Art Brothers, etc do quite well in the malls in the outskirts and grabbed all the business from the people who live in the heartlands and do not come down to Orchard Road often. Many of these buyers do not even know of the existence of Gramophone as such. If Gramophone really want to dominate the market and build up a presence, they should open up branches outside of Orchard Road and challenge their competitors there as welll.
Corona11 Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 You are right on the observation of the neighbourhood mall strategy, but Gramophone's bosses may have their own strategy, I agree what you say on the Orchard Road outlets operations and cannabilism of the same market...but what the management of Gramophone do, or not do in that area is finally up to the owners, as only they have an accurate picture of each outlet's bottomline......and of course I am not saying that what Gramophone does, or what I say may be correct, as mistakes do happen in business.
mz Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 i haven't been to gramophone in years... since i stay at choa chu kang and work at chinatown.. where is this new taka outlet at.. which floor? didn't see it that day when i was there... and do they sell US pressing of CDs?
Jediknight Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Went to Taka on Sunday - didn't see any Gramophone outlet there ??? Where exactly is it?
kopiman Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Taka Gramophone is at Basement 2. I think it is opp M1...not sure. Anyways, if you are using the Wisma underpass & you arrived at Taka B1, just take the escalator going down to B2. Turn left & walk straight....it should appear on your left. I like the long narrow aisles. And they have iPODS as testing stations. Quite cool.
mz Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 it's at basement 2, but it's not very obvious. it's near to watsons... somewhere at the middle.
ntuc Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 i just back from there. it is just besides bossini. opposite M1 and watsons that area.
pschia Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 There is no more M1 there.. replaced by SingTel already.
Protocol1624705808 Posted July 24, 2006 Author Posted July 24, 2006 It's been 1 month since I last went there ... Anyone knows if the DVD rental is up already?

soundaudio Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Told by friend of mine. There is one Gramophone outlet at Centerpoint.$3 per pc fr DVD rental. You may try there. It's been 1 month since I last went there ... Anyone knows if the DVD rental is up already?
cracker Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 was at Ngee Ann's branch over the weekend, they have started the rental service; but didnt check out the price. Looked at the stall directory realised that Supreme was no longer in Ngee Ann. So is Gramaphone the 2000s version of Supreme's domination from the 80s till late 90s ?

Thanks, knew abt that one for some months already ... Gramophone rental price should still be the same since last year (correct me if I'm wrong) ... 3 disc plan for 1 mth - $30 3 disc plan for 3 mth - $75 Actually I find browsing of DVDs via file booklet kind of inconvenient ...
