jerry2308 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Was considering the Harman/Kardon HS100, Denon denon DHT-500SD and JBL DSC1000 system i saw at best denki. Becos i heard from the salesman that if in future i wana upgrade,i can still use back the speakers and get a AV reciever. What other system can u guys recommend?I know Yamaha produce good sound quality but there is alot of models, which are you guys refering to?
dbchoong Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Hi! Welcome to XP ;D How about checking out JVC's HTIB offerings - especially the sets that come with the highly rated RX-F10 digital receiver. The good thing about this setup is the DVD player is seperate, so upgrading is easy. There is choice of satellite speakers or standing speakers...
armoury Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 You need to double-check that; I'm not familiar with the systems you cited, but often the subwoofer is connected to the main unit with some sort of proprietary "system cable", which suggests to me that it can't be used again later if you get a "proper" AV receiver to "replace" the main unit. Check if the subwoofer accepts an RCA cable as its input, which is how an active sub would be connected to a receiver. If the price of those sets is coming to the S$1,000 mark, then one viable alternative is to buy an entry-level receiver (about $300-400), and a complete 5.1 package of entry-level speakers. Yamaha does a nice bundle, I think it's the NSP230 or something, but it's the same surround speakers they use in their HTiB sets, with a sub that can stand alone.
jerry2308 Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 Yup,this HTIB i mention cost abt $900-$1399 which is around my budget. Is it possible to get a setup with 5.1 satelite speakers,av reciever, cables, subwoofer and DVD player for $1400?

I think yesterday's Strait Times there was a Marantz ad that might almost fit your budget but minus the DVD player. :)
dbchoong Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 whoa, Marantz moving into HTiBs now It wasn't a HTIB... I think it was a SR4600 + a 5.1 Mordaunt Short speakers.
howk798 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I think yesterday's Strait Times there was a Marantz ad that might almost fit your budget but minus the DVD player. :) The advertised one is with Marantz SR4600 with Morduant Short new satellite and sub woofer 5.1 system which I think is more suitable for bedroom. Thanks. :)
jerry2308 Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 I think its over my budget as the one advertise on Straits time is $1399 without DVD player..If i go to KEC and ask them to recommend me a setup with a budget of $1400 with DVD player, will they con me?Cos i think i will look like a person who can be con as i totally know nuts about sound system..

Dirtrun Thanks for your reply Dirtrun..I have only been to megastores like Best Denki and audio house to listen the few sound systems i mentioned above. Got a bad experience once when i was in SLS,went to a shop selling sound systems to try asking for advice on my budget. But the salesman said: If don't buy then don't ask so much. Was so disappointed with what he said that made me condemn all this shops there.
DIRTRUN Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Aiya, If get that type of attitude, come back here and post lo, give them some bad pr. That aside sometimes have to be a tad(make it 2inch thick) thick skin, if get that type of attitude, just walk out and go to next shop, I am sure like in the 5th or 6th shop, you will find someone willing to do some serious business, hehehe :) Myself even worse, going from shop to shop asking for used stuff(what to do, no money to buy new) they lagi see you no up, hehehe :D Hehehe Dirtrun
jerry2308 Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 Ya...Sometimes i wonder,SLS is a hot spot for tourist. And if this pple can give this kind of attitude, what might the tourist think..They are actually bringing down the image of singapore..
DIRTRUN Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Hiya J, But seriously the Marantz/ MS combo is a decent starter set and KEC is well received by the Xp populace, here. So do go check it out and let us know what you end up with. Cheers. Dirtrun
jerry2308 Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 Oh by the way,KEC is fixed price or can negotiate for discounts? Is it cheaper then those megastores?
louco73 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Ya...Sometimes i wonder,SLS is a hot spot for tourist. And if this pple can give this kind of attitude, what might the tourist think..They are actually bringing down the image of singapore.. As an amazed Kiwi living in Australia on his first trip to Singapore a number of years ago now (late 90's), I ended up in SLS looking for a portable CD player (see it was a long time ago ;) ). There I was in electronics heaven thinking "I love Singapore" :p Of course I got caught out by the many tactics. I wanted a particular brand, but "This model is better" comments swayed me to look at others. I bought something that did the job, but probably wasn't as good as what I was looking for. I was also one of the lucky ones, I had an idea of what I wanted. Now when friends ask where to buy things I send them to specific stores like Cathay Photo for camera equipment. If they insist on going to SLS I get them to research exactly what they want online, check the price at home, and only look for that model in SLS. Don't forget to ask does it include GST too ;). Using those rules you can normally get a reasonable deal in SLS. At least in my limited ang moh experience ;). Does the attitude in SLS annoy tourists? I think it will definitely annoy some, but for many to see so many shops in one complex like that it's quite amazing and an interesting experience. If it's different from home that is part of being a tourist and is interesting and fun. Plus I think most guide books explain what to look out for in SLS now anyway.
DIRTRUN Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Oh by the way,KEC is fixed price or can negotiate for discounts? Is it cheaper then those megastores? Oh I think the negotiations for better cables/interconnects can be arranged, prices are already quite low already so I doubt there is much leeway there. Dirtrun
armoury Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Hence, why I never go to Sim Lim to buy AV. I've always bought at KEC, because their prices are actually quite competitive with SLS shops, and even if marginally higher, at least you know after-sales service is also good -- SLS stores will forget about you the moment the sale is closed, but KEC does look after you -- which is good business since in future when you upgrade, you naturally go back to them. You could consider something like the Marantz SR4600 with lesser speakers -- the MS package is around $1K alone, I think, so the SR4600 is around $400, get a set of speakers that costs in the $600-700 range, which I think the Yammies do, and then a decent DVDP in the $300-400 range and you're done.

jerry2308 Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 I saw this ad from yahoo auction : http://auctions.yahoo.com/sg/i::96384460 Is it worth buying?
dbchoong Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I saw this ad from yahoo auction : http://auctions.yahoo.com/sg/i::96384460 Is it worth buying? The Pure Acoustics speakers are bit suspect. Not even sure if there's a dealer for this brand here. Many has reported buying these speakers from vans in car parks. Prices in the auctions for these speakers can range from $100 to thousands. Personally, I wouldn't buy this although there were some guys who mentioned that they are decent for the price (if below $200). :)
SiriuslyCold Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 didn't someone buy the Pure Acoustics set for $250?
wyvern Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Thanks for your reply Dirtrun..I have only been to megastores like Best Denki and audio house to listen the few sound systems i mentioned above. SLS is a pro-toursit, anti-singaporeans shpping mall except for the IT stuffs. I'll never buy any AV product from SLS unless all the shops in S'pore are gone for good. My wife once bought a 1 gig SD for $100++ for our Digicam not knowing that the camera uses only CF so when she goes back to the shop at level one to change to CF, she still have to top up. What nonsense especially when everyone knows that SD cost more than CF. Furthermore, by looking at their face you'll know how 'pro' they are when bullshitting.
dbchoong Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 Today's Audio House ad in the Strait Times seems to have some good deals. And if you correctly choose the team to win the World Cup, you get back half the money. Anyway, go check it out. ;D
