kayel Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 The specs of this Acer 37" LCD TV are impressive, and I have seen it playing the "I, Robot" DVD at upscaled 1080i at the recent PC Show. Looks good, although I did not see the standard TV channels and assess how they look. Anybody has bought this and can give a short review? I am very interested, cos can get it at $2620 (incl GST and delivery). Any review will be greatly appreciated. http://www.acer.com.sg/products/lcdtvat3705/p_lcdtvat3705.asp

Norman_Chan Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Hmmm....interesting ...with 1920 x 1080 resolution ...but respond time is 12ms and a weight of 36 kg ! Comes with digital tuner ...does it mean can do away with the set-top box when Media Corp. implement HD Boardcasting ?

Any review will be greatly appreciated. http://www.acer.com.sg/products/lcdtvat3705/p_lcdtvat3705.asp I got this LCD at the PC show and I must say you have a good price there. It cost me $2900 with 2 additional years warranty. Which shop do you get that price from? I was considering between this and the Amoi but got it in the end as the PC show price also includes a Olympus 4MP camera. Watching SD broadcast on it is good and watching HD (now World Cup) on it is AMAZING. It's quality is comparable to the 1st tier LCD/Plasma brands and I think with HD broadcast, there's little differentiating the quality between 1st tier and 2nd/3rd tier manufacturers. IN any case, hard to find a true 1920x1080 panel at that price and the huge number of inputs it has is a plus point. You can read more on the panel by visiting an Australian forum - http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=28451&st=0. I'm currently on the Starhub HD trial and there is a particular problem when connecting the STB to it through HDMI and DVI. When connected, the panel can only display up to 576p whereas it had no problems going up to 1080i using component. I have contacted both Starhub and Acer about this. Starhub does not see any problems on their end. Neither does Acer. Acer has tried connecting through HDMI and DVI to both DVD player and PC and could get all the way to 1080i. From the forum, I think a firmware update may solve these problems and Acer is now helping me solve these problems. You may wish to compare this Acer to the Amoi before you make your decision. But if your mind is now set on the Acer, welcome to the HD club!
kayel Posted June 20, 2006 Author Posted June 20, 2006 Thanks guys for all the replies ;D. Phil, I read your CNET review even before I posted this thread, so it was a good intro. But what was your impression of the PQ of free-to-air transmissions like Channel 5, 8 and other cable channels? Do you think this TV supports 1080p resolution for the upcoming PS3/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray? Some websites say it can while others (like dtvforums) say it is not a true HD panel and thus cannot support 1080p. Anyone else has any comments? Jitcheng, I have already noted your review over at the HWZ forums. The only thing I don't like about this TV is its immense size caused by the side speakers. I would have preferred it if the speakers were below the LCD panel.
pschia Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 From what I had observed so far at the showrooms and my own LCD TV, it would seem that the PQ of free-to-air and SCV transmissions is generally inversely proportional to the resolution of the LCD TV. This is usually related to the quality of the source video themselves. What I had immediately noticed when I first got my LCD TV was that some commercials have a lot of artifacts and jaggedly words and lines while others looked quite OK. My guess is that the former were from low resolution video sources and the latter were produced at higher resolution. The high resolution of the LCD TVs really shows up faults of such low resolution vidoe clips whereas direct view CRT TVs are more foregiving in this respect. And the higher the resolution of the LCD TV, the more unforgiving it is to the PQ of low resolution video source. The same would go for programs broadcasted by MediaCorp and SCV I suppose. Some shows were produced and broadcasted at higher resolution and so would appear better than those shows that were broadcasted at lower resolutions. My personal impression of showroom observation of the PQ of those 1,920 x 1,080 LCD TVs in the market now like the Acer and Toshiba models is that they seem to be rather soft compared to that of lower resolution 1,328 x 768 LCD TVs showing the same video demo. Maybe these full HD panels would only reach their full potentials when provided with 1080p video materials to display. ???
