Hi all,

I remember that there are 3 discs which can calibrate video, THX optimizers, Avia and DVE. So far I only got myself a THX optimetizer which is inside my Pearl Harbour THX certified DVDs. I have tried to calibrate brightness and contrast using that.

The question is here: I wonder will I get exactly the same brightness and contrast setting if I were to use Avia and DVE to cablibrate?(Pls note for this question, my only intention to ask is for brightness and contrast...)

Thanks for the reply.

Chances are u will get close enough results from either of them.

Exactly the same? Maybe, maybe not; but close enough.

Hi Jag,

Thanks for the reply. I recently bought desray's Z2000, now still playing around this "new" toy.. Kinda newbie come to this Pj calibration area. Another question if you can help, if I were to calibrate the contrast of the picture, will the setting of brightness affect the end result of contrast setting? Meaning if I were to set the brightness to 0, then calibrate the contrast, and IF I were to set the brightness to -20, then calibrate the contrast. Do you think the end setting of contrast will still be the same? If it is not same, which one should I use?

Regards,

Just calibrate 1 first and then the other . Then double confirm and fine tune . It may affect contrast when setting brightness or vice versa but usually not much or won't at all.The end setting is the same .

I'd recommend the same thing as Jason.

Thanks Jason and Jag for the help. It is quite strange, I found that the end setting of contrast is a bit different if given different brightness... Must go see eye doctor liao... Anyway, I am much used to CRT than DLP, so end up keep reducing brightness for the sake of black level, but now felt the picture is a bit dark even in bright scenes...  :'(

Hi Fooklai, hoped you're enjoying the Projector :)

Anyway to add on to what Jag and Jason have mentioned. Please be mindful that you have to calibrate your Projector settings for different set of connection. What I mean by that is the use of DVI and Component connection. Do not use the same settings for BOTH. DVI and Component settings differs from one another. Use the different 'MEMORY SETTINGS' for the different source.

If possible, try to get AVIA or at least Sound And Vision Calibration Disc to properly calibrate the Projector to your own liking. My preference settings may not be 'your cup of tea' - so remember to re-calibrate it.

There are some arguements lingering in some HT forums regarding the use of THX-Optimizer incorporated in a Movie Disc. It suggested that there maybe 'bias' sentiment on the aftermath calibration. PQ may appear good on the movie itself and not others. But then again, I think the deviation shouldn't be too much lar. Ultimately getting a dedicated Calibration Disc for proper video calibration will still be the best option for you.

the argument on the THX that came with the movie is that, the level is for that disk only.  well no one can possibly calibrate the display for every disk.  so we just do as much as we can.  and since most of them are authored properly (probably in the same plant), the levels should be all the same.

for BTB, to be really precise, I remember the THX drop shadow is IRE10 whereas the DVE 1st bar below black is mush closer like 13. So do it for  brightness the range is "finer" in the DVE.  But then the PJ's adjustment itself is not tha fine anyway, so I guess all will end at the same setting.

Hi desray, definately enjoying every moment of big screen experiences. Btw, I got myself an Oppo only, so currently only using DVI connection. I know calibration will sure bring out the best of the pj, so still playing around now.

It seems like using calibration discs like AVIA and DVE will yield better result. Any kind souls willing to lend me the AVIA or DVE?

Avia, DVE and optimode all got their own inaccuracies. But they are all close enough not to worry about how much off they are from absolute.

Just calibrate to ur best, and enjoy the fruits of ur labour. :)

Dun forget to recalibrate every few hundred hours.
