Hi everyone,

I'm new to this projector hobby and appreciate if someone can help.

Max distance between the screen and projector is 9ft, and that's why I'm looking for one with a short throw lens for the biggest possible image. (70" - 80" in width??)  Internet research gives me models like Panasonic AE900, Epson TW600 and a few others which are just beyond my budget.

So, is there such a model out there at below $2K?

Thanks.

Hi there tj, welcome to xtremeplace place.  Based on the figures that you have provided, hitting 80" with the current crop of D5 LCD projectors like the TW600, AE900, Z4 and TX200 is not an issue.  However, your below 2k budget concern will indeed rule you out of the 4 pjs mentioned here.  Most likely, you may have to opt for a 480p projector instead to meet your budget.  In fact, if your screen size is at 80", you should be able to go for some of the mid throw DLP pjs as well.  Some choices that meets both your objectives will include the Epson TW20 (LCD), Infocus 4805 (DLP) and Infocus IN72 (DLP).  For the Epson, you can demo it at KEC while the Infocus ones can be demoed at Fast Logic.  Good luck.

Yes, with 80", not so much of a problem but with 100 ", you may face an issue.

I actually bought a VPL-HS20 before and face this problem regarding throw distance.  Sony offer a solution by selling me a $4,000 lens.  :)

Moral of the story; download the projector manual and look at the throw distance chart before buying the projector.

Many thanks for your response.

Yeah, this throw distance thing has really caused lots of limitation (within my budget of course).

Have just checked out InFocus and Epson sites to find out throw distance for the 3 models, and apparently the TW20 can project the biggest image from just 9ft away.

TW20 - 109"

In72 - 70.789"

4805 - 65.5"

So, the TW20 seems to be obvious choice for me, but am a little concerned about its contrast ratio at only 1000:1.

I know specs don't usually relates well to the final result, but seems to me it's well below the current averange standard.  No?

Can any TW20 user shares with your experience with this projector?

On the other hand, I've just browsed through this Optoma MovieTime DV10 (with DVD player built in) on the net.  Seems like a suitable candidate for my budget.  But guess it's not available in the Singapore market?

Thank you once again for reading.

Hi tj,

I've installed an Infocus SP5000 1 month ago.  It's projecting onto a 80" screen over 3 to 3.5 m.  No issues except that full screen pictures (eg. normal TV channels, 4:3-format DVDs) overruns the top of the viewable screen area by a bit...

The above native 720p model is definitely below S$2K but not sure if your budget covers video cables, installation & pulldown/fixed screen or not...  If it does, then it would also fall out of your budget...  =)

Hope the above helps.

Cheers,

tj, I believe the Optoma Movietime is already available locally.  In fact, I think KEC has both the Optoma and the TW20 in their showroom for demo.  KEC can be found on the ground floor of The Adelphi right beside the information counter.

Hi xbfloater,

Thanks for your response.  However, I don't think it's suitable for me as 3m is already more than 9ft.

Cheers,

tj

Hi jeffong,

Thanks again for your response.

Just found out that list price as stated at CNET is S$2699 as compared to below a grand in the U.S market. :-(

Anyway, I'll check it out with KEC over the weekend.  Hope the actual retail price is more reasonable otherwise will have to look for another model again.....

Cheers,

tj

Hi,

IIRC the Optoma Movietime is having an offer of $1999 with a free gift of a carrying case when I check it out last month.

Thanks.
