Hi all!

My daddy wanna get a 32"/37" LCD TV mainly for watching Starhub maxTV, occasionally for console gaming and DVDs. The distance from the TV rack to sitting area is only about 2m at most. Looking at a futureproof model with no budget in mind as yet. A friend recommended Toshiba 32/37WL58E, Samsung 32LX2R, Sony KLV-V32a10 and Samsung 32m61/r71. Is there anyone who owns any of these models here? Able to provide some reviews?

We've been going down to Best Denki for the past months and each time a promoter would come and recommend a different thing so it's been kinda confusing. I'm aware that the actual TV picture quality and screen size will be different frm the DVD animation they're playing in stores hence could the gurus here enlighten me on what factors i should look out for?

Else, another other suitable models?

Thanks in advanced!!!~~

Miumiu, if budget is not a problem, go for the Sony V32. It's bigger brother, the V40, was rated "the best LCD in the world" by a reputable international magazine called "What HiFi". They said, "The Bravia produces brilliant vivid colours that fairly leap off the screen... It's also smoother than extra-virgin olive oil, with no obvious sign of motion smearing, background 'grain' or colour bleeding. Edges are pin-sharp and rock-solid, and there's little discernible digital noise to spoil the party." Based partly on this, and the opinions of tens of other owners, I bought this set.

Next in line would be the Samsung 32M61 (NOT the M71...!). This set represents the best Samsung can do with their electronics and, from what I hear, the M61 is a good challenger to the Bravia and might - MIGHT - even be better.

Finally, I'd look at the Toshiba 32WL66 or Tosibha 37WL66 (NOT the obsolete 58 series, though the latter does have some fine reviews too). While these sets have the lowest contrast ratio (the 32WL66 is 1200:1 and the 37WL66 is 1000:1), there are very many people in the UK who've bought them and are absolutely delighted with them. Also, the Toshibas represent excellent value for money.

Ignore everything else or you'll find yourself getting lost very quickly.

Summary: Budget not a problem: Bravia V32 or Samsung 32M61

Budget an issue (or your dad wants a 37"): Toshiba 32WL66 or Toshiba 37WL66.

Hope this helps.

For the moment...I'll wait for more 1080 LCD TVs to hit the market.  Hitachi seems to be launching theirs soon, now keep seeing their 1080 ad on the TV.  ;)

Read the original post: 32" or 37".

Do you realize how close you'd have to sit to the screen to see a difference between 720 and 1080 on a 32"???? Do you think that's practical and real world?

With 1080i HD broadcast, HD-DVD and Blueray DVD just around the corner, and a LCD TV is not something that u will likely change every 1-2 years, I'll still prefer a 1080 panel for the 1-1 matching.  Downscaling from 1080 to 720, ur eyes might not see the loss, but the heart will still see the loss.  ;D

General Manager from Hitachi spoke on Primetime Morning on CNA saying that if you are going for 37' and below, get LCD. However, if the screen is 42' and above, it is advisable to get Plasma.

Apparently Hitachi's "1080" is only applicable to the vertical resolution. Based on I've read, the resolution of their new 42" plasmac is 1024 x 1080, not 1920 x 1080.

I think it will be priced competitively here though..

Edit: It has just been launched:

Saw the Sony Bravia V series, though im no expert, i was impressed by the pq but v32 or v40 doesn't fit in well the tv area. (actually im more int in the Nike vouchers  ;D)

My dad's interested in getting Hitachi 37", cant remember the model but it's the one with IPS going for 3999 at BD  :-\

Anyway, how's the Toshiba 37WL66 compared to 37WL58? The latter has 2 hdmi, 2 tuners and media card reader which i doubt will even be fully utilized. >,<'

The WL58, if memory serves me right, uses a 12ms refresh rate panel, while the WL66 is 8ms. That said, the WL58 certainly looks better built (i.e. tougher) than the 66, and there must be SOME reason why the 58 is MORE expensive than the 66, despite being older... Perhaps it's a Made in Japan v/s Made in somewhere-else thing? God alone knows. I do find it interesting that a newer model is significantly cheaper than an outgoing / obsolete model...

Incidentally, you can't really go wrong with either of these. The 58 has received good reviews (see the most recent What HiFi) while I'm not sure if there've been any formal reviews of the 66 just yet. Either way, owners of both sets are happy.

I'd go with the 66 purely on the assumption that it possibly uses newer technology...

Went to HN last night.

The replacement for 58 is 68 arriving around year end. 66 is new model not replacing 58.
