petetherock Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Hi All Need opinion. I was thinking of ordering some items from USA but was once told that there might be hum with a voltage transformer? Is this true? How bad is it? Thanks
dbchoong Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 What you need is a good quality 220V-110V step-down transformer. The humming from transformers are usually caused by poor lamination. See this article by PSAudio on humming. :)
petetherock Posted May 30, 2006 Author Posted May 30, 2006 Hi Thanks So if I order say an outlaw power amp I can get a good quality transformer and the sound quality will be as good? May I ask for a recommendation of where to get a good step down transformer and how much? Thanks
Andre1624705826 Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 I'd advise in getting a proper voltage for your equipment. Transformers, aside from the hum issue, also may generate electrical noise, are current limited and the worst case if you forgot its voltage rating and plugged it into 220/240V directly, kaboom!
zepp3lin Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 I suggest buying a electrical noise filter install before your step down transformer, this kind of application were practice in semiconductors machines as most of the machines are from USA and Japan in 110volts and noise in the electrical line are very critical to the manufacturing machines. As for home use you can use the Nemic Lambda noise filter, you can source it out at Sim Lim Tower. Buy a good higher rating step down transformer as it can ran quite hot and with smaller amps rating your step down transformer can trip very often.
