htancl Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Just receive an invitation from Starhub to take part in the HDTV Trial which include FIFA WORLDCUP 2006 in HD Format plus other HD contents. Already Registered but still need to be going through another round of selection.
desray Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 I have taken up the offer...but like you mentioned...No guarantees that I'll get it. :P
dna Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 wow HD worldcup!!! pray, bride, plead, gangsterism, etc..goodluck...at least got chance to get it...some can only envy. :-\
henryhoo Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 Is this trial remotely connected with Mediacrop's trial? Is it using existing digital box or Starhub will distribute HD boxes for the trial?
varun1624705824 Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 Right. So how does one apply to participate? :-) Best, - V.
htancl Posted May 19, 2006 Author Posted May 19, 2006 This should be different from the mediacorp trial. Starhub will come to install the equipment before the worldcup starts and there is a one time surcharge of around $52 + installation fee. Think you will still need the digital box in additional to the HD box.

Quest88 Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 varun you look very anxious. :P Got another thread in general about this. Seems like total cost is S$80 or so. Maybe you should give starhub a call.. those people who are discussing have been given an invitation.

Gideon Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Crossing my fingers for them to hook it up to Marantz S3. Still waiting. :)
wind30 Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 ya lor. At least this is better. The previous trail application was free I think. At least now with the fee you weed of the not so interested people so the REALLY interested guys like us can have a higher chance of participating in the trail.
HT102 Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Just signed up! Finally 5.1 sound from the set-top box! ;D
darthlaker Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 It would be interesting to know what SCV consider HD (!) It is NOT 480p or 576p, only 720p, 1080i or 1080p and it's also NOT upscaled standard definition programs either!!
Jag Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 I hope they dun rub HDTV's potential quality in mud and broadcast highly compressed video ....... It's really exciting to finally see HDTV being realised........ not to mention the emerging HD-DVD/BRD formats.
adnhk Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 But 720p and above standards are definitely better quality than 480p or 576p. Anyway, I was also invited and had sent them an email asking apart from the World Cup, what other contents will be made available for us during the trial. The answer from them is pretty bad... : "Thank you for your email. With regard to your enquiry, we would like to inform you that there may be 1 or 2 channels for the trial. However, this is subjected to change. If you have any questions on StarHub Digital Cable and MaxOnline services, please call us on our Customer Care hotline at 1633 (+65 6820 1633 from overseas), email to this address or fax in to 6725 1603."
deano Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 is the hd feed true 1080i? what other channels are in hd? the good thing about paying $80 is you get all scv channels till dec?
darthlaker Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 yes, i forgot to mention that....bit rate is also very important..no big deal having 720p, 1080i, 1080p and having crappy bandwidth.....
deano Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 maybe i will call starhub. i not too happy they are not too upfront with what they are offering. feels to me like some sort of pressure tactics with the late notification.
adnhk Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Hi, I have already called them yesterday, but the CSO knows nothing more than what I had received via email :( Here's another "standard" reply I received from them today: My question: Can you advise what are the type of channels I can expect out of these 2? E.g, HBO HD with Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack? Their answer: "Thank you for your email of 21 May 2006. With regard to your enquiry, we wish to inform you that the high definition channel after the World Cup matches has not been decided.. Hence, we will not be able to advice you on which channels will be available for high definition. If you have any questions on StarHub Digital Cable and MaxOnline services, please call us on our Customer Care hotline at 1633 (+65 6820 1633 from overseas), email to this address or fax in to 6725 1603."
