kevkie Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Guys,Gals, I did a search but could not find many results that fit what I wanna ask assistance for. I'm looking to but a DVD player for my first HT. I seriously dont know what to look out for so could you please recommend a few models with ball park figures of the retail prices so I can go check them out online and in the local stores? Budget I'd say S$200 - S$300? Thanks in advance for your replies!
Norman_Chan Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Try to get the Nachus at S$179 , quite values for money at BIG ...come with HDMI connection too.
DIRTRUN Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Hiya, Pioneers, Philips, LG are better at ahem discs if its any use to you, that is. All the major brands have a few budget models and there are also the MIC stuff as well. Cheers Dirtrun
kevkie Posted May 26, 2006 Author Posted May 26, 2006 Guys, Which connectors and outputs and stuff would I need to make sure the player has? I play a lot of ahem discs so thats very important... ;D S$300 for the player can only get me a budget model!?!?! :-\ :-[
SiriuslyCold Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 budget model good enough to start with - the Philips is recommended - under $200 i think - reliable and plays everything
varun1624705824 Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Which connectors and outputs and stuff would I need to make sure the player has? At least component video. Ideally also HDMI, but that's considerably over-rated IMO and only relevant if your TV has an HDMI input (typically only found on plasmas and LCDs). S$300 for the player can only get me a budget model!?!?! :-\ :-[ Depends on the user's definition of budget - DVD players can run into the many thousands, with increasingly marginal improvement per dollar. With $300, you'll be okay. With $450, you'll be much more than okay (Denon 1920: SACD, DVDA, DivX, Faroudja DCDi, component and HDMI out). Best, - V.
kevkie Posted May 26, 2006 Author Posted May 26, 2006 Hi Guys, Ok, noted then, thanks! So far, the few from Pioneer I have seen: - DV-686A-S - DV-676A-S
YANG Posted May 27, 2006 Posted May 27, 2006 You can try out those players with on board multi-channel surround processing with analogue 6 channel connections, with those multi-media speakers to start with. When your budget allows, get a HT amp/rcvr and speakers all at once. Then spend your time to upgrade your current player or accessories(cables...). Till then...

kevkie Posted May 29, 2006 Author Posted May 29, 2006 Hi All, Thanks, yeah I saw that the 686 has SACD and it pretty good to start with...and now its discontinued!?!?! Danggggg! Any idea what the replacement is and how much that player costs? Anyone? What other models could I be looking at as well for S$300!? :)
Tyer Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Well, Pioneer's model of 6XX series usually come wif SACD, DVD-A and would cost ard $300. So wait and see what the new model is abt. If not, I believe stores or shops in SLS should still have 686 stock for sure. :)
kevkie Posted May 29, 2006 Author Posted May 29, 2006 Hi Tyer, Thanks....I'll go hunting early next month. Hope to grab a good deal on the player. I dont see any new products on the Pioneer website...geez.
