Guest wcseow Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Hi Apologies if this q sounds stupid Got my Samsung R71. Connect the digital Startub to Pioneer DVD recorder(via AV) and then from DVD recorder to R71. Set up the digital box to output widescreen but I still cannot get to see proper picture on R71 when set it to 16:9. Still only get proper picture only at 4:3. Why? Is widescreen and 16:9 the same? Play a DVD disk that says widescreen format, but it stil does nto fill up the R71 screen at 16:9 mode... thanks
Guest jonlee Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 For a start, all broadcast AT THE MOMENT are only 4:3. Thus, the pic will always look funny (people become fatter) on a 16:9 (or widescreen) display. For dvd that are widescreen, they are usually 1.85 or 2.35 :1. A 16:9 display is only 1.77:1. Thus, u will still see some black bars on the screen.

To see widescreen in full, then we need to buy widescreen LCD TVs then? and those typical LCDs on the market (like Toshiba Wl66, Sony V-series) will not support widescreen? thanks
basspundit Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Check your tv manual for the zoom modes that are available, there are certain modes that fill up the 16:9 totally with correct aspect ratio, however there will be some cropping involved, either the subtitles or the top would be snipped. You would not be able to view the full 4:3 with the correct ratio in 16:9 Hi Apologies if this q sounds stupid Got my Samsung R71. karlie Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Which starhub setup box? I have seen that in both the SCV Digital setup box and in the SCV DVR the output selction is fixed at "4:3" (the menu exists but the the value cannot be changed). AFAIK, only the HD trial will have 16:9 output
Guest jonlee Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Don't think there is any widescreen content for starhub digital at the moment. The upcoming HD box will be widescreen (16:9). For dvd, in order to fill the complete screen, u can either use the function from the dvdp or from your widescreen TV. Some of them will have a function to expand the 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 image into 1.77:1 to fill up the whole 16:9 screen. However, u will either loose some image at the edge or the man will look thinner as the image is expanded vertically. Hi, thanks. So the Starhub digital setup box does not work for widescreen? pschia Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 interesting, so they changed the firmware since I changed to the DVR box.... I just got my dvr set-top box and the aspect ratio cannot be changed either. Although it is not greyed out, it is fixed at 'Standard' and cannot be changed. ???

varun1624705824 Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 hi sorry, what is the dvr box? She's talking about the new Starhub digital video recorder, which replaces the standard digital set-top box, and includes a 120 GB HDD recorder with full program-guide integration and plenty of bugs. ;-) - V.
Guest wcseow Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 oh..thanks. the one that they are promoting with SmartTV.
karlie Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 She's talking about the new Starhub digital video recorder That would be "he", not "she"
varun1624705824 Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 That would be "he", not "she" apologies. - V.
pschia Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 hi pschia u can choose standard or widescreen but no effect, right? No. The menu show Standard and the right arrow head indicates that it can be changed but there is no response when pressed. So the aspect ratio is stuck at Standard it seems.
Guest wcseow Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 No. The menu show Standard and the right arrow head indicates that it can be changed but there is no response when pressed. So the aspect ratio is stuck at Standard it seems. Mmm..my set allows me to change though ???
pschia Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Mmm..my set allows me to change though ??? Yours is the digital cable set-top box and not the SmartTV DVR set-top box right?
Guest wcseow Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Yours is the digital cable set-top box and not the SmartTV DVR set-top box right? Yes, that's correct
