With Sony Pictures' The Da Vinci Code earning a massive $224 million worldwide its first weekend, Times Online is reporting that the studio is already looking towards a possible follow-up.

According to Jeff Blake, vice chairman of Sony Pictures, the studio is hoping to bring another novel by Dan Brown, Angels and Demons, to the big screen:

Tom Hanks could return to star as the Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, who appeared in the book and will be the hero of Brown's next novel. Mr Blake said: "We are very interested in filming Angels and Demons. We hope that the relationship with Dan Brown will be a long one. That could be the next project."

Angels and Demons was the reclusive author's third novel after he gave up his job as an English teacher. It tells the story of Langdon's brush with a shadowy secret society, the Illuminati, and his frantic quest for the world's most powerful energy source, in the company of a beautiful Italian physicist whose father, a brilliant physicist, has been murdered.

"The Da Vinci Code" was Brown's fourth book.

CHUD has a humorous take on this issue

The very good news for Sony is that they don’t have to actually make Angels and Demons – modern CGI technology will allow them to pluck actors from Da Vinci and place them in other contexts, and since the two novels have the exact same story – a renowned expert is murdered and Robert Langdon gets called in on the mystery. He uncovers a conspiracy alongside a beautiful young relative of the victim, who is also an expert in something. They are chased by a lone killing machine defined by one aspect – in this case, an Arab. Also, much like The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons is written specifically for the special ed market – they can just change references from “Opus Dei” to “the Illuminati.”

i heard from a friend of mine who is into books ..that angels and demons is better than da vinci code

Most people I know are of that opinion.  I like both more or less equally.  What is essentially the same here, is the template Dan Brown has adopted in both stories which is very much how CHUD has described.  I recommend reading Angels & Demons, but of course, it probably will make the movie experience less satisfying.

I prefer Da Vinci over Angels & Demons... when i read Angels & Demons, it didn't make me feel as excited as Da Vinci.

Da Vinci make me want to read more and complete the book...

Cheers
