Have a chance to buy the LG 42in LCD RTLZ30 for $3299.

Is this a great deal? I have to make a decision asap!

Thanks for any help, all comments welcome

No catch, aside from the fact that it is a display model and it is on clearance. Ive checked it out and no dead pixels plus it comes with a 2 year warranty. They had 2 more also on clearance and they disappeared quick! Ive got the last one on hold for today while I make my decision. I dont normally buy something like this so quick but it seems like too good a deal to pass up!

Just trying to get some reviews and feedback before I take the plunge

Check:

contrast ratio

refresh speed

ports (HDMI / DVI? HDCP-compliant?, VGA D-SUB? at least 2 sets of component inputs (useful but not critical))

resolution

Most important, are YOU happy with the picture quality, especially with fast moving movies AND with standard def television (if they say they don't have an antenna, borrow an indoor antenna and take it there!) ? If you're happy, you have your answer. :-)

The good thing is, unlike plasmas, there's much lower chance of permanent damage having been done during the "display" period (which could be 9 months to a year - make sure you know how long and are comfortable with the duration) - still, have them put on a white screen and check...

No. Just by looking at these 2 items: LCD, and 3299.  For day-to-day TV viewing a 852x480 42" plasma is much better.  Especially now u can hunt for those prev generation japanese brands which shouldn't be much more than this number.

Correction: ONLY if you are able to cut down on ambient light. Else the reflections will annoy and the perceived brightness will be lower. This, btw, is not my perception but a recognized fact.

You may want to look at the resolution: 852 x 480 - NTSC resolution like the old plasmas. This means PAL is being downsampled (paradoxically, the broadcast / cable TV picture actually ends up looking quite good as a result!); it also means you can't make use of HDTV resolutions. If the latter doesn't matter to you, it may well be a good deal...

If diz display set is from a short - term exhibition or small retail outlet , i guess its ok..........

But if its on display & permanently activated,  in a mega-store ( eg. courts), i'd steer clear ;)

I'm watching plasma in bright living rm with all lights on and my family had never had any issues on reflections/brightness. Even after 6yrs. (In fact I never heard abt this issue on reflection/brightness in the 1st 3 yrs even in forums.  Must be a recent thing).  The only time it has an "issue" is when bright afternoon sun is shining directly on it.  I wouldn't call that a normal viewing situation.

Either you're less sensitive to reflections than I am (which is a good thing) or the ambient light in your room isn't so high that reflections become a problem. Far as I'm concerned, plasma and CRT screens annoy the heck out of me especially as I find I'm seeing myself instead of focusing on what the TV wants me to see... thankfully there aren't very many stuck-up people like me. My wife, for instance, doesn't understand what I'm complaining about... ;-)

Hey y'all, thanks for all the good info :)

Well I went ahead and purchased it! Pretty happy with the whole thing, I think I got a pretty good deal. It turns out the set Im getting (arrives this Friday) has actually never been used, as the display set I was talking about before was sold previously!

So Im getting the brand new LG 42in LCD at $3299 which to me is a super bargain.

I had thought about the other point before, ie getting a plasma at the ED resolution because they are cheaper now and they run normal and digital TV better. However I plan on using this set to run my xbox 360, future PS3 and HD DVD players when they are available so the plasma doesnt really cut it for me!

Will update when it arrives and Ive played with it, but for now Im soo excited about my first real "BIG" tv! Going to hook up an amp and home theatre speakers as well for the full experience he he!

Can share where to get it? Is it still available. I'm interested.
