Sony's budget Bluray player will be launched in Japan on 11th Nov, followed by the US, Europe and Australia on the 17th Nov for US$599. This player will be equipped with built in gigabit ethernet network, wifi, bluetooth and USB capability.  In addition, it will be equipped with a HDMI output port, Optical Audio output and 60GB HDD.  ;D

Extracted from IGN

May 8, 2006 - Sony's major E3 conference just wrapped up, and the hardware news was quite big. Sony will release the Playstation 3 in America on November 17. $499 will purchase the unit with a 20 GB hard drive, while $599 will buy the system with a 60 GB hard drive.

Sony plans to have 2 million units ready to ship at launch, 2 million more before the end of 2006, and an additional 2 million units by the end of March 2007.

Oops.. Just noticed that someone else has posted it earlier.  Maybe the mods can combine the two threads together since I'm not able to delete this.

US$499.. with the flagging US$ rate thats only about S$800. Not too shabby I guess.

You probably want the 599 version for the HDMI out.

Just in case :)

Unfortunately the $499 version does not come with HDMI output.  Thus, no guarantee that Hollywood will not apply ICT for component outputs later in the game.  Other than the lower 20GB HDD, other things missing include Wifi and MS/SD reader.  Hence, if you intend to use this for Blu-Ray movie playback, getting the $599 version will be a better bet.

in my opinion, the most incredible thing abt this $599 PS3 is: it can play CD.  This is not trivial, as all other announced BR players costing US$1k above cannot.  If it can also do 480i over HDMI it would be a very gd transport.

Hope the SG version has the usual "additional feature" of being region free for DVD, BRs... (and as usualy mod'able in SLS to be region free for games  ;D )

The latter is now illegal (Singapore-US Free Trade Agreement led to SG adopting large chunks of US copyright law, including making illegal the modification of devices in a way that can lead to copyright infringement) so you're going to have to find some underground bro to do it... when you do, be sure to PM all of us. ;-)

Well Bluray's region coding has Singapore placed in the same region as the US.  At least we won't have to suffer the overly censored movies ala Code 3 versions of DVD's.

I still don't think it is true (did we have that argument on another forum?) ;)

I still think the Singapore DMCA-like provision that was required to sign the treaty does include a clause allowing to bypass region-coding.

On the other hand, with the new techniques of Firwmware updates and key revocation, 3rd party will not be able so easily to produce mod chip: it will have to come from the manufactuerer.

I am 80% sure that the HD-DVD and blue-ray players available in Singapore will not be region coded.

Not with me, Karlie, perhaps someone else?

I wasn't referring to the region coding per se - I was talking about mod chips... HD-DVD, for instance, is currently not region coded at all.

Audio.. since money no object, you should be getting the Pioneer Blu-ray player instead since it supports features like built in Ethernet port providing UPNP connectivity.  ;D

Blu-Ray software will only make their debut in late June, about 1 week before the players start making their appearance.  However, their launch titles will outpace HD-DVD ones including 2 Day-and-Date titles like Ultraviolet and Underworld Evolution.

Aiya, i really hope someone comes out with a universal player soon.......

Just note thattheToshiba player is still not outputting 1080p and it is not comfirmed when or if thefirmware upgrade is going to happen. Also it is also using a the wrong colour space conversion which results in mainly wrong greens.  Lumagen is issuing a work around today to correct that. So I guess all iscan users should ask DVDO to do the same :p
